Perfect advice :-D

I have a set of die nuts* especially for this sort of job...

* Dies made especially for cleaning threads and able to be turned using a spanner or socket...

Here it is, but it's in German... http://www.citforum.de/showthread.php?t=70550

Link bellow had pictures, but now they are gone. The ram was repaired so it had a screwed on top, so you could easily undo the nut, take the cylinder out and replace the o-rings... Pity the pictures are gone. It was from a meeting somewhere in France, maybe someone else knows something about this...

Can some kind person explain the meaning of '
SELF LOCKING NUT
12X175-15-18'

in relation to the top nut on the activa ram. I've never understood all this business with pitch, depth etc? Always willing to be educated.

Mike, pitch is the distance between the crests of the threads... Have a look at the ISO-Metric thread specifications...

be aware there is Metric Coarse and Metric Fine. Coarse and fine refer to the pitch of the thread... Be careful as Citroens have a mix of both!!!

It could be worse. Imagine if there were an intermediate thread as well!

So ... with that said what do all the numbers mean in this example? I get the M12 and now that its a coarse pitched thread (1.75) but what does 15-18 signify?

Type and specification of the material used to construct it I believe Mike. The bolt heads often have a couple of numbers on them to indicate their specification which includes their tensile strength...

As I thought, the ram had to be cut open to get at the insides.... That means it is a very skilled job and will need some skilled welding to reassemble it... Originally the top was pressure rolled/formed... To add to the difficulty the ram body looks to be made of light alloy...

The one really duff one I have has a scored ram and that, looking at the pictures, could be re - chrome plated or replaced...

Alasdair, what's the word from your man who says he can? Has he seen the pictures?

I'll bring my duff one down next time I'm down your way...

I find the idea of putting a "nut" on top of the cylinder great! Just unscrew the bolt, remove the hydraulic piston and change the o-ring say every two years. I think that companies whose business is refurbishing cylinders might do the work... But at what cost that's the question....

That's a good photo...I will pass on the thread to James to review before he starts to investigate.

To have a couple of dozen head nuts and sweat collars made up should not be to much.
