the 12 not 11 digits on the green slip is the same as that on the previous owners V5C with 2 added at the beginning,

this reference number/code is linked to the present registered keeper, so there for you can not as far as im aware use this on line to tax the car on change of ownership,
but only at a post office

I had to go to the Post \Office, from what I know now it seems to be a fraud prevention measure as they could have access to the Post Office CCTV which like banks have to keep there CCTV recordings for an extended time..eg in a lot of cases they can see a face linked to a car ... Big Brother is watching YOU ! , tinfoil hat anyone ?

I taxed the 205 yesterday using the 12 digit number off the green slip. This was with me in Macduff and the car and green slip in Sheffield. 2 minutes on the gov.dvla site. And I am really surprised, I did sorn on the escort on Wednesday and got the refund today, along with the refund for the c5 which I could not do online as it was cat c. It's always been the case that if you tax a car at the end of the month you lose out so nothing new there. It has also always been the case if you sold a car to a dealer on the 1st of the month and cashed the tax in then you lost all of that month. This new system only affects private sales really. Which admittedly would be most of us here who would not go near a dealer anyway!

so is this before you received the V5C in your name/were the registered keeper on DVLA's data base Dave ???????

Yes Malcolm, as was the fiesta I bought earlier in the month. My son txt the ref number off the green slip and I went online and taxed it at 5.30 pm yesterday afternoon. With the fiesta I bought it in the auction at 6.30 pm and the same. 2 minutes it was taxed online in the evening. I know that I moaned about the system trying to SORN the C5 but that was because it had a vic marker on it which had SORNd it anyway. This system is far easier to use once you suspect it out than it was before. There really is not any excuse for driving without tax as you can tax it 24/7 online.

only thing i can see possible here is the TAX will be registered to the previous keep , so look out for notification through your letter box

No as you have to tick a box saying change of keeper and when they get the v5 dated the same day then you are sorted. I assume so anyway as I haven't got the v5 for the fiesta through yet, but it is showing as taxed on the dvla site.

Not to the previous keeper as I ticked the box saying change of keeper. The Green slip also has a different reference number from the v5. Only by one number but that's enough. I assume it's showing taxed to an unknown until they process the v5 with new keepers name and address.

ower ( well her in doors's P*O*L*O the ref No. on the green slip is identical as that on the front of the main V5C except it has a 2 at the beginning,

Yes and that is the difference. If you use 11 digits without the 2 then it doesn't change the keeper. If you use 12 digits with the 2 then they know a change of keeper has happened and that a v5 with new keepers details is on the way.

I had this quandary with my sons Alfa recently. I was determined not to tax it if not necessary. Let's face it if you do the deal on say 3rd of the month, the road Tax has been paid for all that month, and the old keeper will not get refunded for the remaining 27 days of the month.
This is what happened with the Alfa, so I kept checking on "is my car taxed" everyday. It took 14 days to be recorded as "not taxed". As soon as it flagged up, I taxed the car, so effectively the DVLA were paid twice for this month. Bet this makes them a few quid over a year

Spot on. That's what I meant when I replied to someone who said "It's just a few days". They must be making millions on double taxed cars, plus the saving on paper tax discs.

so just supposing you also have a preferred number plate on the car you are disposing of, but want to keep, for use on the new car? the last time I did that, I had access to a local dvla office...and was able to use that cars original plates....but the offices, are gone now.

Lighty i think they closed that loop hole by stating the tax is not transferable from one registered keeper to the next,
it may be possible if they have a vigilant/automaton/automated keeper of the records at BIG BROTHER HQ, they send out a fine if you manage to get through the rest of a complete month before purchasing the tax

Which is just part of the ripoff, as it is the vehicle that is taxed, not the owner
