Mine were making a noise for a few weeks and when replaced the inner race had a ripple/wave worn into it... so it would have lasted for quite a while.....but the noise it was making sounded bad...

Mine on the C5 had almost completely disintegrated, the suspension was almost solid, I had replaced the spheres and wondered why the back still didn't go up and down, but still the arms were sufficiently good to hold the new bearings. Goes up and down nicely now.

Apparently the worst bit of mine was the plastic spacer tube was disintegrated. It was not creaking, more squeaking over bumps and when the suspension height was altered. The wheel was leaning in at the top quite noticeably, and also had noticeable toe in and the thing handled like rolling about on a water bed lol. The tyre on that wheel was knackered and the date stamp on it was only 5 months old. I have no idea how long it was knackered, it was like that when I bought it.

thats very odd Daive as if anything it would be the metal spacer tube gets damaged,
it is very unusual for the plastic tube to become damaged as its the other side of the bearings

The plastic tube on mine was pretty chewed up but that was because I used the 'ring of weld' method to remove the bearing outers.

Maybe I'm mixed up. It was the weekend of my daughters wedding and I was stressed and angry that I did not have the car back. I know they did say tube and they had a bit of a job getting it out.

They will go quiet if they get any bit of moisture in them from even a small puddle.

Get them done sooner rather than later and about £100-150 per side labour sounds about right depending on how bad they are.
Soaking is the key as is getting that stupid pin out and soaking round there so the lot can move about.

Mine are cracking really quite badly now. It's the roads here. I didn't hear a noise from them at all over the 540 miles I did over the channel on decent roads this weekend.

I shall be doing... I want to use it to do a few trips over the channel before xmas (NOT to Belgium) so I'd rather it was right.
