Do you have any experience of the same problem with the 4HP20, or does the inability to drop the valve block out in-situ like the AL4 make such a diagnosis impossible ?addo wrote:Maybe at heart, but the issue is really (usually) crud blocking the valve body.

I've never touched a 4HP-20 inside. Many I've driven gave me the willies; they felt "wrong" in the lower range shifts (slight slurring). Not so bad as a late Magna autobox, if you drove any of them before sailing.
My 4HP-18 is starting to show its age, so that will likely be the next learning curve as I toggle between Dean's how-to and the American book on rebuilding Saab boxes.
