I have another question. If I fitted a BE3 transmission to a previously BE1-equipped car, what happens to the shifter?

Can you still use the same shifter linkage and stuff, but just the little pull-collar for engaging reverse becomes redundant? And of course the little diagram on the stick becomes incorrect, because reverse is on the opposite side?

Or can you NOT use the original shifter system, and have to use other donor parts?

It seems that parts for BE3s are a lot more common than BE1s (for example, limited-slip diffs and gear kits are plentiful on ebay for the be3 but nothing for the be1). I assume the BE3 is the more common transmission?

I would expect that a BE3 Quaife (for example) would fit a BE1.

For the linkages, yes, the collar cable becomes redundant, you might be better placed looking for a 205/306/Xsara/405 shifter complete (depends if your shifter is inside the cabin or in the tunnel) and adjusting the length of the longitudonal linkage.

The shifter in my car is fitted to the tunnel, it sticks down through the tunnel floor and is connected to a long link rod under the car.

You know what's weird, so far it seems to be looking like converting to a HDi would actually PHYSICALLY (not electronically!) be easier than the XUD11, because HDis had the BE3 as standard, so if I had a donor HDi car, I can just move the whole power unit.

If only the HDi ECU wasn't so awkward. I never dealt with it personally but people who regularly do engine conversions all seem to hate the HDi, and tell me to keep away from it at all costs unless I want to use a after-market engine management system, because with the HDi ecu, unless you are prepared to use the dash, exhaust, ignition lock etc from the donor car, the ecu will crap itself.

Ok, anyways, so I digress. Back to important stuff.

If BE3 and BE1 parts are generally interchangeable, then keeping my BE1 is probably a decent idea, because that means I don't need to change anything else.

But how to mate a XUD11 to a BE1?

Specifically, what to do about the clutch and starter motor? Since the XUD11 has a different flywheel/clutch.
