Had a mishap in my xantia, can this be DIY'd?

I think SAE80 mineral is recommended, I know BXs did not change very well with EP90 in them, any EP80 non synth should be fine.

A lot of gear oils are heavier than 75W. I'm also an additive believer but that's discretionary.

I have been told that some Citroen gearboxes (autos and manuals) are VERY finicky over which oil is used in them. For example, the BE3 gearbox will not tolerate anything but BV 75W80, as it will strip the synchromesh cones and turn to treacle. While I don't know that this is the case with the ML5T gearbox, why risk it, especially as the oil is both inexpensive and available.

I have used this oil in both my previous Xantia (110HP HDi) and Gracie, my current one (90HP HDi). According to the Xantia handbook, this is the only oil that should be used in the manual gearbox, and they ought to know.

Thank you for the information, you left me guessing with your last post. I don't know you or your reasons for posting that and to believe everything posted on forums without any reason would be very niaive, I am sure you can appreciate this.

I may be wrong, but Ive NOT heard of the MANUAL boxs being very fussy of oils. I know the AUTO gearbox's are VERY fussy. The early HP18 Mechanical auto box's needing DEX 2 essential, and the later auto adaptive gearbox's in the V6's needing an Particular Esso transmission oil and nothing else..

I do understand about your caution re. the information I posted. Unless I know the source I would check around for confirmation. I checked the handbook before posting the type of oil (even though I have already used it) as I did not want to be responsible for causing any further damage.

Ok just to update on this, it went back together quite easily, only took an hour and a bit and that is because I was doing it in inadequate half-light...

Only needed a ball-joint, gear box oil and a drop link in the end. Managed to free all the broken bits, slotted the drive shaft back in bolted up new bits, and away it went. I need to replace the tyre really, it has seen better days and has some wear where it was dragged along the road. Luckily for me the spare is good and when I replaced the two rears at the start of the year I kept one of them as a 'get me out the s***' tyre as it had some life left in it, this will now be the spare.

Car drives exactly how it did before (a wollowy armchair) and only has battle scars at the front section of the cill to show for the adventure.

I have a couple of litres of Saab manual gearbox synthetic oil in the garage, it's called MTF0063. Could I use that in my HDi gearbox?
