Cunningly just shows it floating in mid air above the vaccuum pump I can't acutally find a drawing of the wirigin harness to suggest where the relay might be. From what I remember, removing the back part of the wheel arch trim is not that hard....

Here it is, on a late '99 car - mine is early '99 and the same location.

Thanks Richard, the picture in Jim's repair thread shows a violet relay and a green relay in the bracket above the wheel arch liner... the one just below the drivers fuse tray is a green one.

You'll find a location drawing in the second PDF link in my original post - it shows it to be in area D which is the wheel arch.

I'm going to take some measurements at the relays in the drivers foot well area, will report back soon.

I'm not sure what the green relay is for but it comes on with the ignition key and doesn't switch with the cruise control, and none of the voltages match what would be expected when pressing the brake pedal or turning the cruise control on and off, so definitely 100% not the right relay.

Must be above the wheel as it claims. The weather has packed up for today so I'm going to have to leave it for now and won't get a chance to look at it further for a couple of weeks, but I will get to the bottom of it.

Wild guess at it being the starter Inhibitor relay? Isn't that in that general location? If I recall it is on the C5

Nope, I know where the starter inhibit relay is since I had to wire to it to perform the starter helper relay modification. Its one of the three on the left hand side in the under bonnet fuse box.

(Interestingly the wiring diagrams have the location of that relay wrong, unless someone has swapped the relay locations around for a laugh! They say right hand relay but mine was the middle one...)

This is the relay I replaced, you can see it has the hole in the top for switch cleaner application. It is situated under the trim below the steering column and if it's the same as mine there is an identical one next door which you can swap it with to prove it out. Lord knows why I kept it but it was still in my relay drawer in the shed

You had me excited there for a minute Stempy, I thought you might have saved me stripping the wheel arch liner, there is a grey relay with a tab that looks exactly like yours in a green socket in the foot well area:



Sadly it wasn't to be, I checked the voltages on all pins of that socket and none of them changed with the brake pedal or cruise control switch. To be really sure I did the same test on the other relays and also on the two empty sockets, nada.

Looks like the relay really is in the wheel arch. Damn those inconsistent French who can't make up their minds where relays should go. Nice thought though...

Yep, that's where mine was but it had two grey ones in there. It's obvious a cunning French stunt to hinder the home mechanic

so if the weather is decent next weekend (ha!) and I can find the original relays location I should be able to make further progress on this repair

MMmm, I have a vague recollection now that the other grey relay under the steering column supplied the gear stick lock solenoid, so maybe that is what your grey one is.

Could be, I'll try pulling it out and see if that stops working. (I still have the foot well upper carpet removed until this cruise control repair is completed...)

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and remove the wheel arch liner and see if the relay is there. Only problem is I don't have a Y pronged prising tool, so getting the plastic locking clips out without breaking them will be fun... unless I can find a cheap tool to do it...I used to have one but I'm not even sure what they're called to find another one!

Interestingly on the early S2 cars the relay still likes under the wing as per the S1. It was late on in S2 production the relay moved inside.

So, on that basis I expect yours will be under the wing...

It needs the complete mudshield removed to get at it..

Thanks for confirming that Jim, the wheel arch it is then! Is it near the rear, top or front ?

I fully expect the relay to not be faulty and the problem to be corrosion on the terminals, (I have a nice new can of LPS 1 at the ready for any corroded connections ) but even if that proves to be the case I'm going to replace the relay anyway due to the difficulty accessing it!
