As said mine is an early engine and runs great but does get looked after.
Volvo S80 D5.........
C5 2.2HDi Exclusive 2003 manual (now gone).
2009 Renault Megane, the misses drive.
Had a 1988 BX 19TRS Auto many moons ago.
Forgive any spelling mistakes, it's the phone not me.

I think it is down to correct or incorrect as most would of had maintenance, unfortunally most will be in that state now..

Is it the fact they stretched the service intervals too far, like the renault laguna 2 DCI?? Or shear misunderstanding of the Eolys etc?

I think that all the C5 (and other C-models) service intervals are wildly optimistic.

Since replacement engine fitted I have changed oil 3 time, fresh oil at install, 1000 miles later engine flush and new oil, 200 miles later fresh oil again.

Will get replaced every 6000 miles from now on, does help that I work at garage so only a 15 minute job after work.
