Excellent! Someone has obviously been there before, thanks. I would add that the radio for the 406 is the original type from another car, I believe I do need the Lexia for that ...?

There is this in the manual electrical section:
N.B. : Fitting a non multiplexed radio requires an additional harness and a panel trim piece to be fitted which are available as accessories from the CITROEN network .

I've got the trim - off ebay.. I expect the harness would cost more than the car is worth. I am quite happy to mod it now I have wheelers explanation - that was excellent - thanks.
