C5 spheres

Oh right, I saw mention of that on the forum but I spent to many years repairing radios to be to enthusiastic about them now, most of them I earnt my living repairing, in fact the '50s ones I was selling new . Used to do a few amateur radio rallies but most of them have dissapeared now.

I'm still pretty enthusiastic Peter. I have a nice select collection of 50s and 60s stuff here, A Bush VHF81 in the kitchen, A Bush VHF64 in the lounge, a Leak Troughline on the stereo and a scruffy Leak Troughline in the garage running through a little homebrew EL84 amp.

Pride of my collection is my Pye Fenman II - the DS of vintage wireless

And some other very early VHF sets...

Its quite amazing actually how many radio/TV engineers are also into cars. There were only three of us from our school that went into the TV trade and we were all mad on cars as well, mind you I think it had a lot to do with the fact that we all ran cars before we could really afford to so had to repair them ourselves, in fact most of the teenagers who had cars in the '50s were TV engineers, most other youngsters couldn't afford them.

I reckon the VHF64 is a cracking set when they were new and the tweeter worked, we were Bush agents and sold a number of them, Grundig brought out a very similar set just prior to the Bush, the quality was good but nothing like the same power.

I worked in London for a year and we used to sell Leak, Quad and other expensive Hi Fi all mono then of course.

You're not wrong there Peter We'd have both been banned by now as well as the post deleted...

Ahh VHF64 tweeters Mine works and it's not been repaired yet... Repairing them with new mylar film is a real fun job...

It was the other way round! I've been playing wireless since I was 12 years old (1971) and worked in our local TV Repair place at weekends and school holidays. Even then the more complex and challenging stuff had a great appeal for me. Back then I loved the very early dual-standard Philips G6 colour sets (remember them Peter?) that were in truth a complex nightmare that most hated with a passion but I loved them. It was only natural therefore that I'd come to Citroen and 4HP20 gearboxes later in life...

Our TV Shop used to save up the duff G6s for me...

Just shows that what happens in childhood stays for life

Even then the more complex and challenging stuff had a great appeal for me.

I suspect that quite a few Citroen owners could relate to that statement.

You have a C5 with a sport button Peter, I thought you were going for the trusty 2.0HDi!

I was following an 02 C5 hatch earlier, a very poor riding car indeed, the spheres certainly dont last forever.

I think id be replacing the front pair on yours, should inprove things.

I did go for a 2.0L and that's what it was advertised as and an LX, it turned out to be a 2.2 SX anyway for £300.00 I didn't think I could go wrong and now I have sorted out a few problems it drives very nicely but the fuel consumtion is atrocious, its averaging just over 40 mpg round here, the 406 does 50+, so it may not be staying.

The 2.2HDi is not best known for its economy, for that you would be better off with a 110 2.0HDi.

Confusing that the seller didn't even know what engine or model it was, were they a trader?

No, it was the pool car belonging to a charity in Exeter. I thought though for that price it was worth buying just to familiarise myself with the C5, ultimately I will get a 2.0L 8 valve.

That does sound like a very good idea, for £300 I would have bought it too as its very easy to get your money back at that.

I've a few Hackers in use, and two FenMans (FenMen?) The FenMan II is one of the best fifties radios made here.

The place I worked at as a lad was a Hacker dealer and they used to sell like hot-cakes. They really appealed to the local gentry. Good wirelesses too.

They have just one problem for me. They don't use valves. I only do valve stuff these days.
