I know a guy who just bought a 55 plate 06 C6 with 77k for £4000. Unfortunately this doesn't get me excited at all, I'd rather have a Signum than a C6. (Cue my ban from this forum. I'm sorry, but I'm honest!!)

That's a shocker on the oil level issue on the CDTi and how the maker has weaseled out of it... Normally Fiat engineering is very good but they've clearly dropped the ball on this one. It always used to be Fiat: excellent mechanicals rubbish bodies...

I've seen the rust on the Mondys....

The 1.6 TDCi is just the 1.6 HDi, but I think the older 2.0s are Ford's own.

Signums are BEAUTIFUL!

By contemporary standards they're not too hard on the eye (my neighbour has one) but beautiful they are not. It's also built with all the quality of a Lada as far as I can see. Cheap and nasty...

It's certainly nowhere near as pleasing on the eye as the new Megane is...

Not to mention the headroom in the back seems to be made for midgets.

I dont know, Vauxhall also is burdened with the misery of the Fiats 1.3JTD, which is less than glowing apparently. Head gaskets, EGRs, and more serious problems. Now Ford also has the pleasure of that engine in its horrid Kak

Nope, the more current shape Focus, from 2005, has the 1.6 and 2.0 HDis, but also the 1.8 Ford TDCi. Fiestas use the 1.4 and 1.6. Those later 16v HDis were designed with a bit of help from Ford apparently, they do seem like good engines though. Only the most current TDCi Mondy has the HDi engines.

The 1.9CDTi is a poor design with its oil levels, though no doubt by sticking to 10K mile intervals rather than 20 it would help. Though I do wonder, after 20K how much of the liquid is fuel and how little is the oil. Still, they seem to cover big mileages if they can avoid drowning in their own fluids.

Avoid the Fords Tdci diesels , did some taxi driving a while back and the Mondeos were very poor on the reliability front , the 2.0Hdi Picasso was very popular and the C5 2.0 Hdi was a good bet too . I also had a Fiat Doblo van with the 1.9 jtd 105 bhp engine that had done 150k and it ran sweet and was very perky

Is that the same lump as the Vectra etc gets? They have 120 or 150bhp depending on model.

There is a Taxi ferm not too far from here who have a fleet of C5 HDis, they retire them at around 300K

I think they're like a more conservative Vel Satis. There's no point or logic to the car, but it was still made. Plus the Elite model comes with a "Travel Assistant". Google it, it's ridiculous. Those who know me know how much I love pointless, over designed and meaningless gadgets.

I think I can swerve getting a Signum, even if its just to avoid having a 'Travel assistant'!

I hope the Signum has a better ride than the humble Vectra, those are quite shocking for a big car.

Excellent work, Chris! It's made me want one even more! Basically it's just a big box that gets a bit of air blown through it and takes up a valuable seat - great thinking Vauxhall! Apparently they're removable and fetch about £100 on ebay so most have been relieved of them by now unfortunately

Been following Signum sales for a while. A tidy 53 plate 3.2 V6 can be had for £1200. Too much of a bargain to ignore. In saying that, I haven't driven one.

There are probably worse and less interesting cars around, few spring to mind at the moment though
