Ahh right Chris, now I understand :) Sorry... My brain wasn’t functioning well last night...

That's got to be the mechanical end stop set wrong. MK2 gauges are odd as if you invert the pod the gauge needles will freely move all over the place but as soon as the pod is horizontal and right way up again the needles rest on their zero points. Thing is there's no obvious mechanical end stop as such so it'll be a case of fiddling until the needle sits in the right place when the pod is horizontal and right way up...

Is the sticky speedo now cured?

Success!! The temp needle wasn't pushed in far enough.. the needles need about 1-2mm clearance from the face of the dial.
Any less and the needle doesn't move, any more and it becomes floppy.
Yes the sticky speedo seems fine..(I just have to calibrate it against the satnav so I know exactly what speed I'm doing!!) time will tell. but at least I now how to sort it.. was a bit worried that it would take a while but I discovered some short cuts like not disconnecting the radio and its housing so this time I had it apart in 30 mins and back in about 45 ...difficult steering wheel housing!!
I've taken a few photos for a how to guide which I'll sort out later.
Thanks Jim :-D
