Hub reassembly confirmation

No worries, I've enjoyed myself, glad I could be of help

The balljoint that wouldn't quite go right up its taper is an odd one. Theres no burrs and both surfaces are smooth. Also, the amount of thread available on both sides when torqued up is exactly the same so we're tempted to say that its just a slightly malformed dust cover. Toby's going to keep an eye on it though just in case.

That 3/4" torque wrench is quiet something

As Toby says, we had some fun but with a bit of sideways thinking we got there

Just got back actually, had a bit of a snooze half way. Other than the that break, I made good time. It was an excellent ride out for the XM!

3/4" drive torque wrench...nice! Good work on getting it back together lads.

I usually just nip the hub nuts up on the stands, then drop it on the floor, and do the final torque last thing (I also crack the nuts before jacking it up). You can't do that if it's got centreless wheels mind, and on my mate's C5 it was a bit of PITA as the alloys didn't allow removal / refitting of the nut clip so it had to be jacked up and down twice

That we did, I still can't get my head around how those allen keys withstood the abuse!

It certainly is nice. Light work of driveshaft nuts and balljoints. Jim has seen it and wants one. Think it goes up to 410 ftlb.

You're right, centreless wheels are a problem, as are the wheels on the Coupé which are offset a bit to clear the Brembo calipers. The clip can't be removed and the nut is buried.

if/when i cant get to the hub nut with wheel on, i remove the wheel stick an old heavy screw driver into the web of the vented disc,
fit two wheel bolts to stop the disc trying to move on its retaining screw's,

this locks the drive flandge whilst you undo/do up the hub nut,

Malcolm, we did a very similar thing.

I had an allen key which we used on one side. It made it to 325Nm with marks, however it sheared when attempting the second side. I did find another though that did the second side and came out with no marks at all!

We also found that I have an even thicker allen key should I need to do it again. I did re use the old nuts as they were different to the new ones. The old one is a flat nut with a spacer behind it. The new nut has a shoulder behind it, is this in place of the spacer?

Thanks Jim.

Calipers will take some time. I don't think I have a choice but to split them. I'd like to find a way of preventing the corrosion again but not sure how really. Only problem with splitting them is seal kits are £40 per caliper although whether seal renewal will be necessary I don't know.

these are the main presure seal, the piston dust seal and the small seal that sits between the two calliper half's,

Update on the calipers

I've come across a company in Wales that can strip them down, clean them up, bead blast them, and then rebuild and paint in any colour for £75 a caliper. It does mean sending them away and paying for P&P back (£15). Could probably also supply my own seals as they want a tad too much for them.

Good opportunity to have them painted a colour other than black. I'm thinking silver at the moment, or possibly blue to go with the car.

£75 seems fairly reasonable to me but then I don't know. Thoughts?

Less work for me to muck up

Have just realised I will also need to modify the brake pipe brackets as the braided hoses are slightly different dimensions. Nothing is ever easy eh?
