Self employed loads it, and post code can make a massive difference.
I also have a Mitsubishi Evo and live in the second lowest risk post code area in the country. But, about 8 years ago I was thinking of buying a Birmingham city centre apartment as a second residence, until I checked car insurance, it would have more than doubled my premium even though I was only going to be there some of the time !!

I dont think anyone is doing anything wrong or being self employed or anything, its just greedy insurance companies charging those who abide by the laws RIPPING them off.
I myself for a honda civic 1.8vtec upto 12k PA, 42, TS10 renewal went up £150 from aviva, last year paid £390 this year £553, so did a bit of shopping around and nothing could come close. It was cheapest quote with an excess of £150 all others were £200+.
I also went to aviva as a new customer and that quote was dearer and that had 12 weeks free!!
I also dont think upping your excess is good economics, found that out from personal experience.
I just tried AXA out of curiosity, although they will not cover me, despite me double checking my details and even trying to describe things in different ways. I meet all their requirements too, at least according to their FAQ.
Um, lol I guess is the term to use here. , although their 'up to 90% NCB' does interest me enough to call them instead to see what they say , watch this space.
EDIT... Nope, won't insure me full stop , no reason given she did try to see but its not the age of the car as she checked and that's < 25 . No points / no accidents ever / sensible occupation / low value car.
Hmm. Andy wonders if its because I might take advantage of said 90% discount being (I think) very low risk.

You need to play the game when phoning up and just be cheeky and knock about £50 or so off your renewal quote, even if its cheapest and say that you've had that elsewhere but if they match it you'll stay and they often try to better it a little, sometimes only by pennies or a pound but still better

That's fully comp (3rd party was more expensive) with Legal Cover (£2.00 a month).
Im not surprised insurance costs are increasing. Our C5 estate was ran into recently, something id call a reasonably minor incident ended in a £4800 repair bill plus the cost of a weeks hire car, all taken car of by the insurance.
Had the other car not of been third party then the cost to repair that would be similar. Im surprised how much a minor bump costs. Its amasing how costs escalate.

OK Well I spoke to Privilege and asked if there was anything they could do... As it happens I have my home insurance with them - and it's not automatically notified to the motoring department..
I mentioned this - and hey presto - 10% extra discount! With these large figures 10% is quite a lot - it's brought my premium down from £352 to £316 - and I guess that's a bargain given the other crazy quotes I've had.
Im just renewing my insurance, well looking at it anyway, ive managed to get the Activa fully comp and paying monthy for £346.42 all in, its £315.25 if i pay in a lump, thought thast was damn good, with some company called Yes car insurance, still going to the broker in town though as he told me to when my renewal is up, worth a try.
Interestingly ive also had a quote for.....................wait for it, £18,734.96 with no monthly payment option yes please
£18,734.96 ... do they know Activas are no longer for sale
Ive been looking into renewals for my C5 recently, still coming up around £800 as the cheapest, though im yet to get my actual renewal through, as ill like to stick with the same company. My Activa is the same for insurance as my C5, thought it would be more!

I've tried in the past on these price comparison websites upping the ammount of excess and found it a total waste of time as going from no voluntary excess to anything up to £250 only reduced the premium by under £25 a year. It would take you 10 years of no claims driving to claim back one excess payment and I just don't think it's worth it.
