Thanks for the advice Peter, I had a look yesterday and took the cover off the end of the gearbox, unbelieveably as I pulled it off a bolt dropped out. I figured out the bolt attached the sliding mechanism to the shaft, put the bolt back in and tightened it up, cover back on and oil in, all works fine ! Took it round the block and all gears ok 
So wish I could have found this out 2years ago
oh well, now to decide whether to spend some money putting it back on the road, not cost me anything so far.
Sadly as I jacked it up to get under it the sill under drivers door collapsed, about a foot of bad metal under the paint, not good. In need of a full exhaust and pair of tyres, and a bit of tlc to the brakes, although very surprised to find they are all free and not seized on after sitting nearly 2 years.
So wish I could have found this out 2years ago
