More Hdi info required

The second pipe runs right next to the one from the air filter down to the turbo. The engine changed around 2000 to have more anti-pollution gubbins - there is some sort of water / air heat exchanger down the back of the engine on the later cars, and this makes the cambelt a bit more difficult as the already difficult bolt in the top cover is obscured by the water pipe to (or is it from?) the heat exchanger. Some (maybe all?) 406 HDi 110s used a Dual Mass Flywheel, but I don't know of an easy way to tell. If one has had a clutch change that would take some potential expense away!

Check carefully the gear change - if reverse is difficult this may point to an impending problem with the gear change cables, and they are dear to replace!

Peter,

Open the bonnet, from the Air cleaner, a pipe goes to the back of the engine, and NEXT to it theres a Second pipe going to the front of the car...

GET A 110! Seriously!

2.oi 8v units did NOT get the FAP filters!!

Not in xantias or C5's so I doubt VERY much the 406 will have either.. They only came along when ALL engines went 16v

I wasn't talking about a FAP Paul - on mine (a 2001, so it's got the EEC2000 DEPOLL engine according to service.citroen) there is some sort of air / water exchanger bolted to the back of the engine - the pipe for which (actually I suspect it's the return pipe) comes right up the end of the engine and obscures the bolt down the back of the cambelt cover. Maybe it's to cool the recirculated exhaust gas so that it really gums up the inlet tract!! This engine is also fitted with the vac operated swirl valve on the inlet to the inlet manifold.

Yes, Iv'e got the message, an early 110 is what I am looking for, I looked at some pictures on ebay and can clearly see the turbo pipe on the 110 so know what I am looking for now. I have been chasing several on ebay but if they are a reasonable price they sell very quickly, going to Bristol to see one tommorow (if it hasn't been sold).

The one I looked at with the leaky h/g went for £1495.00

Indeed. See the threads about C5s with their disintegrating steering wheels, corroded in handbrake cables, DMFs, DPFs on larger engines, electrical suspension funnies, welded in bolts in rear calipers etc etc - hope my Xant keeps going for a good while yet!

Peter - another one to check is the inside of the rear door shuts - Xantia estates are known to rot here (mine is showing signs

) - but I don't know if a similar malady afflicts 406s.

Thats interesting about all those C5 Points - so far Ive experianced them ALL.. well, off side hand brake cable, and this weekend sometime, rear brakes, Ive already seen to the nearside, but the caliper was sooooo bad, it had dug the disk out!! YES! Seriously!

Infact, I may just make a post about it....

On the C5 the "some sort of water / air heat exchanger down the back of the engine on the later cars" seemed to be there to warm up the heater/coolant faster than normal when the car is driven lightly. Blanking off the EGR stops this from happening.

Although in a different topic, the same thing I posted about. Its a kind of eberspacher heater fitted to warm the coolant as otherwise they would take forever to warm, certainly for say a cooler climate like Norway it would probably never get warm.

Interesting tip there to disable it, although in this country I guess you could simply unplug it, hopefully without BSI complaining. I have seen said heater (on an 806) it was just behind the nearside wheel arch area on those.

No, that's a different thing you are talking about spider. The Eberspacher is under the NS wing and burns diesel to heat the water. Seems to have been an option, possibly only on Exclusive (in UK at least). The device we are talking about is down the back of the engine, and interchanges between recycled exhaust gas and the coolant. As to whether it is to heat the water, or cool the exhaust gas for emissions I don't know. All I do know is that the return pipe to the water pump is right in the way of the already awkward cam belt cover bolt down the back of the engine

Actually thinking about it, Steve's idea of it being to heat the water makes more sense as the water flows in 'hot' from the engine outlet then returns to the water pump, wheras if it was to cool the EGR I would have expected it to take cold feed and return it to the rad for cooling...but maybe that's not possible with the pump in the block!

A car I was going to look at in Bristol today, before I learned it was sold, had an 'Auxiluary heater' and that was an 'LX' presumably its an option.
