Ok thanks for this. Much better to see it as it cuts out a lot of mechanical jargon. Am fetching the car back from the garage in the morning so will try to move the linkage, if I'm stumped I'll take a picture.
Hopefully I won't have to go down that route as the pit is 12 miles from my house and I don't have any ramps!
Bumpy Ride Xantia - expensive fix?

Speaking about useful threads lost in obscurity (I mean in the supasticky):

Everything you'd need to know about sorting dodgy height correctors
thanks to Kev!

moveing the manual hight control lever inside the car is very unlikely to free much of, as the main running fault will be the auto/self adjusting section of the mechanoisum,
the only way to sort this out long term is remoe the unit from the car and work and lube both of the spring loaded turrets till they flop about completly freely,
i dont know were that indy got his price from, but Martin at Pleiades will sell you a referbished H/C bracket/mount/linkage, when i bought one from him a couple of years ago it was £40 quid inc carridge and turned up the very next day,
regards malcolm

Revisiting that parts illustration this morning with fresh eyes the parts
to look at are numbered item 6 (what many call the dog bone) and item 4
which is what the dogbone clips onto and for want of a simple description
is what gauges the current height position of the car's suspension by
'reading' the position of twist on the anti roll bar via bracket 4 that is linked
on one end with a small metal foot shown in the illustration.
Now I've seen this foot snap off with corrosion as the height corrector
mechanism seizes up and the roll bar still twists.
