5 hours labour @ £40 + Vat = £235, GSF price for the kit and pump is £100 near enough, add on the garage margin £20 say, then add the coolant, and you're looking at the thick end of £400. If the pulley is required too, add another ton. Steve's garage must have pretty cheap labour rates!

Yes your right there, infact many garages charge more than £40 an hour.

Though i did get my 2.0HDi 206s cambelt and water pump bought and fitted for £220 last year. Though as i say, i know the garage owner well so get a good price.

I also think £2200 is steep for a 52 plate. I paid £1255 for an 02 plate with 95k miles and full history.

Leads me to my next question...

If your belt breaks before 100k miles and you have a fully stamped service book (main dealer) with no missed services... would Citroen foot the cost of repairs?

Thats wrong, for the 2.0 8v HDi it's definitely 100,000 miles.
The 1.4 & 1.6 HDi's are 150,000 miles.

I certainly wouldn't trust a belt for 150,000 miles, regardless of what Citroen say. Even 100k is pushing it IMO

Hi Folks,

Sorry for the delay but I've been stuck at work the past week and running to hospitals with my wife...well I got the car for £2100 with the timing belt and tensioners done, a service, a new MOT which resulted in a new back box on the exhaust and new rear discs and pads so fairly pleased... picked it up on Saturday there it's a gorgeous looking car and lovely to drive.

I don't know about prices maybe here in Scotland we are getting fleeced with 2nd had prices but some C5's I've loked at have been even more expensive than that for an LX and with more miles, I've even seen Xantia's going for £1,200 - £1,400 and the garages refusing to budge on the price as they will sell them......

Cars do seem to hold a higher price in Scotland - supply and demand of course and buying one from a long way south has it's own attendant problems.

Congratulations on the new car, sounds like a better deal it having had the cambelt done now.

Ive been all over the country to buy cars, ive been to scotland to buy a couple but mainly further south than here. I find cars tend to be very expensive around here where i live. Expensive rubbish usually.

We have a 52reg SX HDI, its a great car, very nicely specc'd. I hope yours treats you as well as ours does

Most of the prices quoted seem cheap to me. My Saab belt change was over £500, and that was without a water pump. Incidentally, I read somewhere that the 2008> C5 belt change is 120,000 miles, but in many cases the change will be time based rather than mileage. Many belts have a "shelf life" of 5 years even if the engine has only done 10,000 miles, so I'm surprised that the C5 is said to be 10 years. The engine "hours" are not recorded, and they are the true record of belt use. It's made of the same material and does the same work as other manufacturers. Are these time and mileage figure official from Citroen, or just educated guesses ? I would really like official figures as I am in the market for a new shape C5.

I had mine done on my Xantia yesterday. The bits were £90ish from GSF with an aux belt, water pump and cambelt tensioner kit. I had intended to do it myself but work commitments meant I paid a local garage £150 for the labour.

Citroen are currently offering a fixed price of £295 for any model and age belt change at the moment which seems reasonable for a dealer.

£500 is a lot of money for a cambelt change, however it depends on how involved he job is.

I believe the later HDis are 150K miles between belt intervals, I tihnk this covers the 1.4HDi, 1.6HDi and later 16v HDis. Its stated at that mileage or 10 years. It suggests that for harder use (not exactly sure what that could be but one comment mentioned constant town use and climate) then the mileage is shorter.

I don't take much notice of those intervals as for me that is far too long, and I think its worth doing sooner for peace of mind. Your also asking all the tensioners and water pump to go for 100-150K miles and ten years, which seems a very big ask. Not to mention most cars only see a coolant change during water pump replacement ...


I would say stick to 5 years or 70-80K, after all, what is £200-£300 for a cambelt change in that time period.

Our 2002 C5 2.0HDi 110 8v has just had its second cambelt kit and water pump at 140K, the first done at 70K.
