Great Dan!
Shes REALLY worth fixing, very late Xantias are rare, and really are a GREAT car!
Get them sweating, but dont get rid! EVEN if the box has gone chances are theres PLEANTY of others in Pooshows or more unlucky citroens..

Indeed, millions and not hard to swap them either. Often they can be got for a very small price from a scrapper...citroenxm wrote: Get them sweating, but dont get rid! EVEN if the box has gone chances are theres PLEANTY of others in Pooshows or more unlucky citroens..
Just check, if you can, that the synchros are good. That's the critical wear point on a BE3...

Jim,
Will it be a BE3 on such a late car.. Im a bit unsure if the car REALLY is a 1.9 TD, because IM sure ALL DERVs were HDi by this time.. ah, stupid me, possibly a HDi 90, but push clutches are strong... its the STUPID pull clutches that are rediciliously weak!

Yea, I remember asking Xac about that, but we came to the conclusion that there was not much in the Final gear ratio, both engines would be dooing 80 at AROUND 3000rpm...
What I was try to say was, Im sure the 1.9td was REALLY gone by 2000/2001, so this car could very well be a HDi 110bhp with pull clutch
OF COurse, I could very well be wrong again

2000/01 is well late for a 1.9TD as you say Paul but you never know. One that hung around for a bit before being registered possibly...
Dan, what's your RP number and can you confirm if it really is a 1.9TD. A quick visual will do the job. If there is a hunking great plastic cover on the engine and it has two turbo pipes next to each other by the airbox then it's a 110HDi. A 90HDi only has one turbo pipe. A 1.9TD will be naked and have a big sliver injection pump visible out front..
110HDi ML5 'boxes are a tad rarer than BE3s sadly...

The box's are a WONDERFULL box especially with cable changes, its the AWFULL release pressure plate that fails VERY COMMONLY!!
They tried to be a bit more clever, and the pull clutch IS in two pieces and is fitted in two pieces, but they are only held together by a Spring clip, and either this gives are the release bearing falls apart!
When I did the Clutch job on the Hospital Car, the famous green HDi 110 I had lots of trouble with I got in touch with the AA to do with my customers claim for premature failure, and the technical guy said these are VERY common for failing!
Ive done 2 out of the four I have here and the friction plates were all still serviceable, it was the release bearing in BOTH caes.

Yes, another of the less bright innovations on the part of PSAcitroenxm wrote: the technical guy said these are VERY common for failing!
When you think about it, they do do some silly things that with a bit of thought could have been done much better really.
I'm thinking pull clutches in general, cable gear changes, hydraulic clutches in general, Activa rams, hydractive electrovalves and ES9J4 oil-tightness
I can't blame PSA for the failings in the late autoboxes. That was fairly and squarely down to ZF and Siemens...
One thing I like about an automatic. No clutch to worry about

xantia clutch problem
It was the silly spring clip that went in my Xantia 16v VSX. Pedal went straight to floor, but couldn't select ANY gears. I had to put it in gear, then flick the starter. A big lurch and I was away--I had to get the car home.
I will have to do the clutch on this S-reg TD, as it is really heavy, and started to judder a bit. The hardest part with a pull clutch is trying to get the fingers of actuator lined up with the slots in the release bearing. A bummer if you bolt it all back together, and it hasn't .
