Non of mine have keypads - only the ZX :(

1997 was the introduction of Keypads Peter, when EPIC came to the 2.1 ... yours are all Bosch, and the XM Bosch never got the mod... unlike the Xantia..

My first 'YBL' did have a key pad strangely enough, that was the latest on '497' but none of the others had. They were all registered Jan '96 but all had some differences, I think it must have been a change over time.

FWIW the damper is a red herring, they are pointless items which cause bother and are best binned.

It sounds to me that unless there is a reason why the engine is under more load than it should be (such as seizing alternator bearing etc) as Peter as stated your anti stall just needs a little trick. As indicated it is the accelerator lever stop; I would give it a couple of turns towards the lever and test drive. Go easy though, if you adjust it up too much you lose engine braking...
