You can't fit a manual cable to an auto-adjust car - as you've found out, the spring on the pedal lifts it, whereas on a manual one it presses the pedal down. Perhaps that is the fault you have - you are missing a top stop on the pedal, rather than there being anything wrong?

Fitting a new cable is not to be taken lightly as is requires access to the infamous plastic clip at the top of the pedal

Thanks for the info on the manual cable, just been reading the BOL and it looks like you need hands of a 4 year old to get in there, thats saved me much greaf,
It does look like there should be a top stop with how high the pedle is.

Theres an M reg 1.9td in the scrapy near me so I'll go and have a good look tomorrow and see if it's got a top stop ( and nick it if it has).

Still none the wiser as the one in the scrappy is a manual adjuster.

Could it be that the return spring on the peddle has been located in the wrong position ?

Mark, I've got to pop over to where Jenny is tomorrow (she's got an auto adjust cable) and have a look. :)
If memory serves, her's is quite high too, will take photos.
I really would prefer to swap the auto cable with a manual one, it makes life so much easier.

Didn't get a chance to take photos but am going back on Sunday so should have some up then.
The clutch pedal on Jenny isn't as high as yours though.
Don't know how old her clutch is.

Right, here's what her pedals look like.
I can't see any stop for the pedal.

It may be that someone has fitted an auto-adjuster cable in place of a manual one. I once replaced an auto-adjust cable with a manual for a car dealer because the pedal was ridiculously high. I cant remember about springs because it was a long time ago, but the manual will still work without the spring. Fitting a new cable is a real pig because it has to be threaded through various clips and must be routed correctly. And of course fitted into the retaining clip.
