I believe you can replace the cable if you're handy with a soldering iron and the damage isn't too near the end. You have to get stranded co-ax cable and heatshrink.
Last time I looked for a sensor on ECP/GSF it was something like £50.

Superloopy, thanks for the pointer. I bought one of the ebay items. It looked ok in the photo and examining it in the flesh against the old one I would say that it's OE. The mouldings look identical.
Anyway. tools out and wheel off. I measured the resistance of the new one, just for posterity and it was 1050 Ohms. The retaining bolts came free ok.
Next job was to lay the new one in roughly the right path. It was a bit of a trial to get the connector through behind the fixed brake pipes but a bit of carefull pipe easing saw it into place
I connected it up and did a quick check across the ecu pins, ok so far. The rest of the fitting went ok, the sensor needing a bit of a wiggle to seat it. The rotor looked ok too. Fix everything back, another resistance check and all ok. Start engine, abs light stays on.
Then I thought that I had read that the ecu needs to see a signal from the sensors before it resets.
Load the dog in the car (and my wife
) and set off to dog training, one eye on the abs light. At near enough 20mph, out goes the light
. At the next stop, all back to normal.
On the way back, catch sight of orange light out of the corner of my eye
Look down and grin, its only the low petrol light
I thought I would update the thread and also say thanks to everyone for all the assistance. its a fair time since I've had to find a fault and rectify it.

I believe they're different Colin.
On the ABS ECU Multi Plug:
Left Front Pins 15 and 30
Left Rear Pins 19 and 28
Right Rear Pins 29 and 31
Right Front Pins 1 and 6
To measure, remove the ECU plug with ignition off and starting with the right front sensor, set you meter on ohms and measure between pins 1 and 6 of the plug. The polarity is not important but measure at the plug and not the ECU. Repeat for the remaining sensors on the appropriate pins
A good sensor will measure around 1089 ohms and it is critical. The sensor will either be open-circuit or reading a bit different from above. I've known them read 1190 ohms and not work.
If the sensor appears open circuit on test, re-test at the two pin connector on the end of the ABS sensor cables. the fronts are reasonably accessible on the front subframe but the rears are not
Only ever disconnect and reconnect the ECU plug with ignition off.

Here are ABS pinout pics of both MK1 and MK2. They are different.
