UPDATE:

Ignition lght now not coming on at all and the battery is going flat after a couple of days driving.

What's the voltage across the battery when the engine is running?

Battery is reading 12.3v and doesnt alter any when revd up, if the alternator was goosed wouldnt the battery light come on.

alternator is shot or at least the brushes the voltage should go up to 14.5 when engine is running

The light only really tells you the engine is not running. Provided a failing alternator is giving a bit of output, the light will go off.

This is so often how they fail

Is the light coming on when the engine is not running? Sometimes an alternator will not work properly if the bulb or wiring to it is faulty.

Despite looks, they are not that bad to swap.

The light was staying on then seemed to fix itself but now the light doesnt come on at all running or not which is why i'm not convinced that it's the alternator.

You're not getting 14v across the battery when the alternator is spinning, the battery runs down, which suggests the problem is the alternator.
Double check connectivity between the alternator and battery. If it's fine, problem is alternator.
