Just bought a 306

I think it should be a good little car, the garage obviously wanted it right before they let it go out ( I read your other post)

How many miles n the clock, Although I don't think it really matters on these engines, unless it's above 250,000 miles, and even then, as long as it's had regular oil changes and the other maintenance done then it should be all good,

The garage is one I have used often in the past and are excellent.
I just always take my Citroens elsewhere.
As you will have seen, most of the family use them (on my recommendation).

I took a Renault 4 there for an MOT and they were honest enough to give it a very thorough MOT - he takes an hour to do it and is scrupulous about it - then told me that it wasn't cost effective to do the repairs and advised me to ditch it as a replacement car would be cheaper. They didn't sell cars at the time so had nothing to gain from it. Most other places would have tried to get some work for themselves out of it.
It wasn't what I wanted to hear but they did me a favour and I respect their integrity. They are not the cheapest but are very thorough and value for money.

My second daughter had a fairly snazzy, for the time, Mondeo, that suddenly developed the most appalling grinding noise. It sounded to me like the gearbox but I was working and didn't really have time to sort it out for her so sent her to them to get it checked out.

Most garages are fairly condescending to her, she's very pretty but blond so they think she is stupid.
As far as cars go it does apply, she really hasn't much interest as long as it gets her where she wants to go.

They could have, and I'm sure many would have, sold her a new gearbox.
He put it on the lift and called her over, showed her that it was a heat shield on the cat that was loose.

He said he couldn't repair it as he wasn't allowed to weld on the cat but he could take it off, which he did. He wasn't going to charge her for it either.
She won't go anywhere else now as they were so honest and treated her with respect.


I don't recall the exact mileage but the 306 has pretty low for the age, around 86,000 I believe. My C5 has done far more miles that that and has no problems. The Xantia had around 160,000 on it and drove like a new car so a few miles is nothing to those engines.

The sales guy is the son of the owner of the garage. I had a little chat with him and he said he buys any amount of HDi's and they are sold at a reasonable profit to a guy in London who comes straight up to take them away as they are very sought after around London and they can pretty much charge what they like, people are so eager to get hold of them.
Personally I am pleased it was the TD he got, I think they are more reliable if possibly less exhilarating.

That is a bloody huge intercooler - I presumed it was for the air conditioning.

I had an R reg 306 D Turbo and covered 80,000 miles in it in just over 4 years and the most major problem I had with it was the turbo dying (which was fine after it was reconditioned). I wish I'd kept it as it was a great car to drive and did go really well!

He spent an hour running around in it when he left work this morning and declared himself happy with it. Prefers it to my C5 which he finds too much like a Transit. He's taking a while to get used to the clutch and brakes which are both heavier and less responsive than mine. This is his first car and he has only ever driven mine since passing his test so a bit of familiarisation will soon put him right.

He still says he liked the Accord* better than anything but it wasn't suitable for what he wants - needs a hatch for his mountain bike(s) - the Accord was rubbish for that as I discovered when I found it was a saloon and not a hatch - this on the phone to the insurance company with the car parked outside the window - the insurance girl told me it was a four door and I didn't believe her, had to go outside and check. Damned thing had a boot - never looked in when I bought it, just assumed t was a hatch, and we all know where assumed gets us :oops:

*Had an Accord 2.0 iLS before the C5 that was killed by a Mini Metro :!:

Did a little more today, got the cold start fast idle adjusted correctly, and I think that the glow plugs may be faulty, as it's a little lumpy on the cold start, as it had been adjusted to start and run at too high RPM when I got it, and I take it that this was a mechainics bodge to save the previous owner a few bob... :roll:

Cleaned the interior aswell today, and talk about years of c r a p under the rears seats ( and £1.20 in change :D ) so the car smells a little better now, and I'll put the glow plugs on the list of things to do.

Looked at the brake fluid too, and found it to be a deep red colour :shock: I'm sure it should be clear, so I'll put that on the list too.
I'm surprised that this wasn't changed when the rear brakes were overhauled with new cylinders, shoes, bleed nipples and hand brake cables in January this year... :shock:

The central loking issue has been sorted on a temporary/permenant basis, I just removed the fuse, so no more bouncing locks.
