Why not bypass the supermarkets if you live near a producer?
I'm running a petrol Xant at the moment, but am considering an SVO-able replacement, as a farm just up the road is selling their own rapeseed oil. I'm sure that a bit of negotiation would result in a very good price for oil collected in my own drums (or straight into the tank).

Its called market forces.uncle buck wrote: I don’t believe for a moment that it’s just a coincidence that the Government changed the law to allow the use of up to 2500 litres of veg oil without any excise duty & then the price of the stuff sky rockets.
Some people were using veg oil in their cars, many others waited until it was legal to do so, then it became and they started. This meant that demand went up but supply couldn't because it takes time for oil crops to be planted and to be harvested. Fixed supply and growing demand has made prices go up.
As for the government making prices rise, yes they did, simply by making it legal for people to run their cars on the oil.

Do you seriously think there are enough people running their vehicle on veg oil to affect the UK veg oil market to the extent of causing the price to more than double & there not to be enough crops to supply veg oil....come on manKowalski wrote: Its called market forces.

Personally, I suspect it's just greed. IME, there is no shortage of oil in the shops except for one brand, the cheapest one. Pura is still selling for 56p when others have risen to from below that to 76p, to 86p, and currently now at 99p all that in appx six months!
So why is Pura still 56p? I suspect that the supermarket do not have the right to raise the price, whereas their own brand - of course!
But how do they capitalise on this huge profit if they are also selling a branded oil almost 50% cheaper? They withold it from the shelves. I say it's greed, nothing more, nothing less IMHO.

I just checked: Purfleet yes, but main offices and bottling plant - Erith, Kent.
I wonder if they'd do a club promotion?

Used to live 8 miles from Erith and the Sainsburys at Crayford (just down the road) always used to have about 60 bottles of Pura on the shelf. Sadly Sainsburys everywhere have stopped doing it.

If there are any caterer's suppliers handy you might be able to sweet talk them into letting you buy some. I imagine if you were to buy 50L or so a week it wouldn't be much of a problem.

The way market forces work is that as little as 10% oversupply or 10% demand in excess of supply can make prices go up an order of magnitude.uncle buck wrote: Do you seriously think there are enough people running their vehicle on veg oil to affect the UK veg oil market to the extent of causing the price to more than double & there not to be enough crops to supply veg oil....come on man
How much oil does the average household buy each week for cooking with? How long does a litre bottle of oil last in your household? We get weeks out of a bottle. I'm using over 20 litres of diesel per week in the car.
The potential for using vegetable oil in cars is very significantly larger than the potential supply for it and with crude oil prices heading ever upwards the pressure on people to find something cheaper is there.
If you really believe the government that brought us the millenium dome and had it stand unused for 5 years, the same government that went to war in Iraq to confiscate Saddam Hussein's WMDs and can't find them can make vegetable oil double in price in 6 months you are welcome to your opinion. Never attribute to mallice what can be explained by incompetence.

I'm in Shropshire. The farm shop was recently given a publicity boost by a local MP - the idea is that it's 'greener' to buy direct from the producer. His main business, of course, is with households and restaurants.dnsey where are you located?
Not sure about the leaglity of 'straight into the tank'. Certainly, if it was his own tank there might be a problem, butif it's a customer's tank, presumably the onus is on the customer to comply with C&E regs. After all, the supplier isn't to know (theoretically) how the oil is to be used, any more than if heating oil was used in a road vehicle.
