I reckon the 2.1 td to be best IDI engine ever.

Whilst I would tend to agree (after all it is an XUD!), it is a somewhat complicated design. The main reason for the 'old' XUD's success and longevity, is its KISS design simplicity. Inverted bucket tappets just go on and on - not true of the hydraulic auto system on the 2.1TD

Our main 2.1td at the moment is on about 170k with 1st of everything bar clutch clutch and turbo which its had 1 of each, and the new project one has had no replacment anything from what weve been given in the history and can see from the MOT's on a genuine 88k miles from new in 1999
If anyone wants a nice 2.1td its in the for sale section

I think that lack of antifreeze or should I say the the anti corrosive additive that it contains, was what caused the demise of mine at about 120k, the gasket literally fell to pieces when I took it off. Since changing it about 40k ago, and fitting a new rad and about 50% antifreeze, the water level doesn't move. They are a pig of a job to do but if the car is worth it, it will probably double the engine life.

Could be a slow leak past the water pump gland... only when under pressure at first.
my 2.1td xantia 140k has a mystery water leak, uses around half a litre a month and i'm just praying it's not the head gasket.

2.1 epic to mech pump
For info just finished converting a 2.1td with the fly by wire epic pump to
a Lucas mechanical pump.
1st impressions, it goes better than it did with the electronic pump, also
better than my other 2.1 which was mechanical from the factory.
Only downside is the rev counter does not work so must pick it's signal up
from/through the pump
