Your 406 is a far heavier car than the ZX and the 20 hp difference is not enough to give you that quick ZX feel hence it feels like it doesn't have the kick.

one last question to to stop me being paranoid

is it normal for my 406 to whistle (turbo) between 2-3krevs stops after 3k rev ?

It seems a number of people have mentioned their cars whistle at around this RPM range. I first experienced this noise with my BIL's newly purchase ZX early this year and quickly posted it as I was concerned, everyone pretty much informed me that this was quite normal and nothing to worry about
