Cambelt change on 1.9TD

Whatever you do, avoid a franchised dealer. Timing belt kit and water pump cost me £370 :shock: two weeks ago on my trusty old 212,000 mile 306TD. Got all the bits back and was interesting to note that the tensioner bearing looked like it could have done another 70,000 despite never having been changed from new.

Update

Just had full belt kit ( tensioners, rollers etc ), auxilliary belt and water pump supplied and fitted by recomended, reputable family owned Saab specialist for £345 incl. Hopefully this will ensure no visits to 'le ard shoulder' when I visit France in 2 weeks time for les vacances.

What if the replacement failed in the next interval?

If the bearings are in good condition and there is no reason to suspect it will fail, why change it?

Parts fail prematurely and parts wear out, statistically speaking if you look at the life cycle of most things, you're better off with nearly new than new ;)

Personally I've just changed my belts and I didn't change the tensioners, I did change the water pump, but changing the water pump was the reason I was changing the belts rather than changing the pump speculatively.

I agree with Kowalski on this. If as Gammy said, his engine has only done 60,000 in 6 years, there's no way the tensioners would need replacing. I've had XUD's in BX's and 205's and Xantias and although I've changed belts at 45K, I've never needed to replace tension pulleys before 120K.
