Unless you have money to burn or do your own servicing, the maintenance costs of the Xantia should be taken into consideration. If you DIY, and are happy with it, the Xantia can cost very little more than any other car of it's class; if you have to rely on 'specialists' for every little niggle then you'll pay dearly for the extra ride comfort.
As to the question of ZX or Xantia it really depends upon what you need from your car - do you need the extra space, aircon, towing ability, HDI engine and hydro-ride the Xantia can offer? And, heaven-forbid me mentioning it here, why restrict your choice to Citroen?

Concerning the maintenance, if you're not going to Do It Yourself, the ZX is a better option than the Xantia, but there are much better options than the ZX (from Renault, Peugeot, Ford, or Toyota).
Now, if you go for a XM and expect to leave it in the hands of Citroen to maintain and fix, prepare to sell your house and all your wife's jewlery. That should be enough for the first year... [:D]

Disagree, for the cost of a ZX here I'd say its the best choice in its class, Renault rivals (19, rust prone and unreliable and Megane which also has poor reputation for reliability) Peugeot 306 is the same car but costs more and Toyota's Corolla has dull dynamics and styling.
