I think you're getting your priorities wrong - there's far more likely trouble to be worrying about. There's the window winder cables that might need doing, the steering rack that might start dripping, and the drop links that might start clonking. You can get a lovely ywarm feeling from the fact that you WON'T ever need to replace the clutch and DMF at regular intervals though :-D

You forgot the rear anti roll bar with its bushes bonded to its powder coating :) (And not being able to get the bushes without the roll bar)

Id BE SURE the box is getting cooled well enough ... sadly, even though its Aisin, they are still giving issues and a few have turned up dead box's.. Ive no idea if its a cooling issue, fluid issue or what as they havent filtered to me yet... The C5 facelift 2.0 16v hdi in the Mk.1 (2005 onwards) use the aisin box, they are almost in my price range... Make sure theres pleanty of coolant flow to the box would be my priority..

thanks very much all - no more pics as yet..

I took the car on a decent hack tonight.. about an hour of mixed roads.. no problems at all.. :) tried the suspension and box in sport, worked fine, played the free U2 cd (quietly!) and turned the 4000 lights off with the nighttime setting which only left 9454.. although interestingly I don't have the 3 little ambient lights that some of you may be aware of
its like a spaceship in there!

on one stretch the car did seem to pitch and yaw on gently undulating surfaces, enough to make me stop and check the wheels were on!! is this normal?.. maybe I notice it more as I have less other things to do compared to the old c5...
there is a slight weep from the sump, a few drips over night.. I half expected this and can sort it easily with the spare sump and I have plenty more sealant.. this wont stop me going to Somerset tomorrow..

However, something else will - it relates to Paul's post.. even after one hour, the oil cooler pipes, in fact all the pipework lower down, is stone cold.. I think it must be related to the broken distribution pipe mentioned earlier.. some of you will look at the system and straight away say, yep, that pipe is absolutely critical to flow for all the pipes down there.. I wish I had a diagram of the cooling pipes, it would be easier to see it.. suffice to say I am 95% sure the box is getting no coolant flow.. add to that a journey at 70+ against the wind, with some hills and I think I could be asking for trouble..

so, earlier today on my old c5 110, I replaced the leaking radiator with a brand new one, £27 delivered !! what a cheap car lol.. and it may make one more journey west before it's moved on..
I am very happy the new c5 drove tonight, I can feel confident in it much more now, and I have a couple of loose ends to sort next week..

happy (white) Christmas!

john

ps Paul, there are a lot of issues with minis using a 6 speed aisin box on a US forum.. that reading first thing this morning is what led me to where I am now really.. I am not sure its the same box but

I tried registering for that yesterday Paul, but it seems not possible to register, as a private user as the handbook says? it was login or go away from the looks of it ;)

have you got it? can you see a pic of the pipework if I give you the VIN?

PS John, isnt it GREAT when a car arrives on a trailer and goes away under its own steam! Wish I had the place to do it in evenings though, but living 40 miles away from where I have my stuff puts a big delay on things...

I had a simmilar thing, I recived an XM V6 24v Manual minus an engine and box... and initially after a time scale of 6 months it ended up two years, but it drive away from my yard!

Engine going in, after removal from donar car..

yikes 40 miles paul! that's a fair journey to tinker  I feel for you man

many thanks for the pic!
Pipe 11 - where it joins 10, is broken.. but pipe 10 on my new engine is the manual version, so I don't have a reinforced joining section.. the old engine has still the broken 10.

I can buy a new 10 , and maybe 11 (not sure yet) and fit.. its a big job as most of the inlet stuff has to come off.. I can repair the join between 10 and 11, which is my preference really... and still all the inlet stuff may have to come off..
repair wise : I just don't quite know what will work .. its a small plastic union, no weight and not much pressure...either way just removing that 10 is a PITA ..
but I think the work is important..
