To be frank the upgrade from vista to 7 should really be a breeze, 7 is pretty much vista done right. It's only got a minor version change so anything specific to vista at the time would still run.

Tile was removed but I never really used it, plus I mostly like the aero snap feature (sometimes does get annoying when you're trying to move windows around near the edges though), also looks like you can use task manager to tile the windows: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11073/st ... windows-7/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Well now ... after problems loading my 'old' OS, win2003, I've bitten the bullet and installed a copy of WIN7. Problem I'm having is that for the past few years the system has been rock solid. Now, according to WIN7, its just too old to cut the mustard achieving a rating of 2.9 when benchmarked. Most of the components are around 7 years old, useable but creaking with the new OS. Suppose its time to build another one but I'm way out of the loop. What's the latest 'to kill for' motherboard, graphics card, disk drives these days? To speed the old girl up I've temporarily stuck in another gig of RAM which has helped a little but its still way too slow all round. Any hints?

If money's no option then having your OS installed on a SSD (solid state drive) is lovely.
I'm intreagued as to why you were using a server OS though.

superloopy, have you checked the details of the score of the Windows Experience Index?
The score it gives is the lowest out of the 5 components... So it's worth checking what causes that score..
e.g. for my laptop it says:
Processor: 6.8
RAM: 6.8
Graphics: 3.8
Gaming Graphics: 5.2
Primary HDD: 5.9

So my score is being let down by the built in graphics card for the laptop (so not something I need to worry about or replace)
But it gives you a simple idea of what to look at replacing to improve the score (and whether it's relevant).

Often found on Windows boxes for the sole purpose of talking to proper ('nix) computers and to replace perhaps the most useful tool Microsoft in their infinite wisdom decided to delete as standard from later versions of Windows - Telnet...

What were they thinking? Not having Telnet instantly available is like loosing the use of an arm

A few years ago a friend was having issues on his linux box with the built in ssh client, got him to use PuTTY and all was fine Don't think PuTTY is as useful as a client on Unix based OSes as it is on Windows however.

Best decision they made really.. built in telnet to Windows was very poor compared to telnet in PuTTY Besides who uses telnet these days? (I do for my router, but that's it, due to not being bothered to set SSH up on it ).

I use Telnet extensively as a kind of enhanced ping tool for quickly checking connectivity to SMTP servers amongst very much else...

For that the command prompt telnet in Windows is adequate but yes, if you want more then PuTTY is the choice... And for SSH it's just wonderful.

I have it on my Linux Desktops for talking to my Linux servers that run headless...

Funny thing is by the time you've gone through the steps to install standard telnet, you could have downloaded PuTTY and probably connected to the server you wanted
(Just did it on my desktop, it wants a reboot so definitely better to get PuTTY to connect for you )

We had too much taste/sense to get an Apple back in the early 80s.
I got far more out of us having an 8088 XT.
