There was some discussion in another thread a while back about suitable replacements for the air intake hose, including replacements like air conditioner / drier air hose and someone made the observation that the original hose is deliberately a porous fabric weave so that if the hose ingests a big gulp of water during very wet or flood conditions that it can be absorbed by the fabric and drain harmlessly through the wall of the hose, rather than being trapped in the hose then sucked in by the engine...

So I'd be wary of replacing the original with a non porous pipe like the one you suggest - its a porous fabric weave for a reason.
