sorry to be the bearer of bad news ,but if you have particles in your filter its the pump thats breaking down.I have done too many of them .Has it ever been misfueled ie petrol ? Also lots of hdi components are very intollerent to straight bio.

But how does it get there? My car has no in-tank pump and the filter is BEFORE the HP pump. It's also been the same, no worse, no less for near on 40k miles..astramanmazdaman wrote:sorry to be the bearer of bad news ,but if you have particles in your filter its the pump thats breaking down.I have done too many of them .Has it ever been misfueled ie petrol ?

Any 2.0 HDi with the Siemens fuel system. Just sucks it up with the HP pump. Berlingo in my case.taffy wrote:what fuel pump is on that then?

The particles are returned to the tank as swarf via the return/cooling system, one workmate calls them Glitter ! they are then picked up again by suction from the low pressure /high volume lift pump on the back of the high pressure pump and drawn to the filter. If you have swarf in the filter you will have a darn sight more in the tank. The reason for the high volume is to act as cooling and lubricant in the pump.earlier versions of the system had an ability to limit performance if the tank got too low ie if the tank got down to its last few litres this was to save the pump from running dry,and even ingesting air from the tank on cornering and also the cooling aspect.I was told that on some it could shut down the ECU then allow restart and the car could be crept to a petrol station very slowly. This is now standard on virtually all common rail systems.

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
hm interesting, thanks for that...
If the HP pump has released swarf, could that have got into or damaged injectors? if the tank could be full of it, it sounds like the only safe way forwards is to renew tank, tank pump, HP pump and clean filter body...
Can anyone tell me what their lexia fuel pressure is after a few turns? Mine did seem to get to 125 bar quite quickly, but the car was not starting.. someone said 120B is enough, others say 200..
still seems odd with my problem, how temperature dependant it is,, ok it's not an amazing starter when warm.. 10 turns maybe.. but nothing at all when <10C ..
Is it possible to record the parameters from the Lexia? without trying to point a camera at the screen and turning the key etc.. something a bit safer/more repeatable,
edit :
went to car just now, 10C, pouring down and was not looking forward to feeding it easystart.. tried the key anyway.. started better than anytime in the last few months.. about 4 turns...
fuel filter, and one glow plug,, don't think that would make such a difference..

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
Normally as the pump breaks down the swarf will go into the tank be picked up again but only as far as the filter, its too big to go through. You dont need to renew the tank just make sure the filter is clean and clear as much swarf out of the filter housing as possible.because the pump is making swarf it always seems to go to the tank,( it is usually the cam in the pump which starts to wear shedding the hardened layer and contaminating the lubricating diesel which also cools the pump which then goes via the cooler back to the tank)very rarely do they seem to block an injector, it may be because the rail is quite a lot lower than the injectors and the wear is at the friction end of the pump not the top. Obviously if the cam/piston faces wear and get pitted this will cause sideways forces on the piston to bore area and wear hence lower compression. If the pump is running fast enough it will provide enough pressure to run but at cranking perhaps not.Fuel pressure is usually north of 200bar, also remember as diesel gets cold it denser( not a great deal I know) but maybe enough to give that little extra pressure in the rail !
On a different tack had a bipper in to day with hard starting, on diagbox 8 bar rail pressure, then after a while jumping up and down all over the place ,finally started and rested at 290 bar will be looking at the filter next week.

thanks Astraman...
may get another pump at weekend..
it's from a 2.0 16V 2007 Hdi siemens .. anyone know if it will work on an 8V .. and / or - what will and wont work.. guessing a 1.6 wont.. a 90hp 2.0 should..
Also,, I presume I need a seimens pump, as against anything Boschy..

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
You MUST replace with SAME LIKE FOR LIKE John..
Be sure you have the right type. Most early 2.0 HDi have the Bosch Pumps with tank mounted lift pump.. ONLY a bosch pump can be fitted to it again to match the injectors.
