I think I've hit a snag which will probably mean I'll sideline the genny, and instead use the frame it sits in as a base for a pressure washer or something else instead.
There's a couple of wires coming from a dedicated coil in the engine which seem to be part of making the genny actual generate. The coil in the engine would normally be a lighting or charging coil, but in this (archaic) install the wires go via a couple of diodes and over to the bridge rectifier in the genny control box. Without whipping the flywheels off my various spare engines I don't know (and doubt anyway) if any of them have lighting / charging coils fitted, and although I could source a coil to put in, it's far easier to make use of the chassis frame something else :-D

BTW, there was a date stamp on one of the crapacitors of 1970.

Here's the wiring diagram from the genny. The wires in question are the two Y - yellow and one L? (light green) coming from 'Engine' in the bottom right hand corner.
A basic wiring only (apparently) - own work

That'll be the field exciter supply Robin.. AC from the engine mag. and rectified/regulated by the bridge and associated circuitry to provide the necessary field excitation. Yes, without that, a bit of a show-stopper...

You could work around but not easily... I could give you some thoughts on how you might... You'd need to cobble up a separate supply for it from a little auxiliary alternator driven from the replacement engine...

A bit like a diesel-electric railway locomotive has. An engine, a main generator and an auxiliary generator to provide field excitation to the main generator...

Ta for that, Jim, but it's not worth the effort as it was more of a fun project. I spent a little time coaxing a spare 5hp Biggs engine into life this morning which I was going to use, so I now need to find another use of that

Yep, used to see the little 'genny' units stuck on the ends of the big gennies in Maginot fort gensets :)

You can tell I don't often pop in on this thread - but I've been out all day and was doing a catch up on 50 odd posts when I clicked on a post by Mick on the list.

For those that aren't aware, if you haven't visited a particular thread for a while, the Forum has an annoying habit of taking you to the last post you did visit which may of been years or months ago and not the latest post on the notifications.

So what popped up on my screen was this post!, specifically last photo zoomed:

viewtopic.php?p=780392#p780392

And as I can spot a bug at 50 paces, I balked at my steak and kidney pie after said straggler appeared on screen.

Hence my reply, which I didn't notice ended up 4 pages later on today's topics! :rofl2: No wonder you all thought I'd lost the plot!

That'll learn me

I thought we had a thread for YouTube videos but I must have been wrong. Anyway, here will do as well as anywhere.

A great song respectfully covered by Deep Purple.

The whole album of covers (Turning To Crime) is well worth a listen. Created during the Covid lockdown it shows that an album of covers doesn't have to suck.

Couldn't find it after going through 2 pages of off topic posts.
