I went back this am, put battery on slow charge, and then back again at lunch.. with ignition on I could now select gears! .. I tried key with injectors unplugged, turned over and sounded ok.. then flat again..
will get a gallon of diesel and use afternoon to charge, plug injectors and fingers crossed !

Re: new addition to fleet
Yes maybe alasdair ..
3 more things am stuck on ...
the fuel pipe clips. I can't understand how they work .. I want to repair one using bits of the old engine pipework but not having much luck.. the plastic insert in the unions seems to be two separate pieces, you sort of lift the middle and then how do you release the pipe.. hard to explain and cant find a pic anywhere.. if I can get one apart without it falling to pieces can I remove its insides I wonder..
I may just have to buy a new fitting..
Driveshaft fitting .. any tips on how to get the longer one back into the hub by myself ? The interemediate is done up. It's just to get the hub far enough away now.. if I undo the strut mount bolts completely will that help ? They are just partially loosened at the moment
I now think removing the upright upper pivot bolt (plastic inner arch out) is the answer
Finally chaps .. there is a thin (5mm) coolant pipe which snapped when engine came out.. it goes between a gearbox exchanger pipe and a pipe up the front of block.. in the short term I wonder what effect blocking it will have.. will try to find a pic.
A repair is my only option for now

That pipe is probably for the auto fluid heat exchanger, I would temporarily repair it by using rubber hose to connect it to the cooling system.

Re: new addition to fleet
Kenny thanks... its a small pipe from main auto heat exchanger hose to a pipe on the block.. problem is, the manual engine I fitted doesn't have the union for it (therefore is sealed up) , the engine I took out had this but its broken.. and either way, changing would be a hellish job... the pipe finds its way under all kinds of items..
what I would love to know is what it does, and also that if I block the broken end (from heat exchanger) will it affect the cooling in any way much.. I still hope to drive the car at some point this week, would be gutted if this stopped me
on a different note, went to the muddy farm tonight to try and start the car, and continue with driveshafts and other things, and there was a very localised powercut.. nothing to do with me.. completely gutted as the skies were clear, it was warm, and a good night to wrap other things up..
on a brighter note
I tried key after some charging today.. all inside lit up like a Christmas tree
even the sat nav thing, stuck in Scotland where the car may last have come alive.. music from the stereo.. gearbox open for business..
with my headtorch I thought (swear word) it.. what difference would a start make if it was light or not?
I turned her over, having forgotten to prime the fuel.. and after 20 turns she sprang into life! no warnings, no drips of oil, no problems!
I don't know anymore, I need to get engine warm, wheels on, gearbox tested, more coolant, etc etc.. we have all been there at the new engine turn on bit..
but maybe, it could be a white Christmas.. an expensive one but..

Re: new addition to fleet
Any other thoughts on this little pipe chaps? An air bleed from gearbox exchanger to prevent an air lock there ?

John have you got the VIN? I'll have a look on service.citroen later. It seems likely if it's very small bore then it's an auto bleed - there is a similar pipe from the rad to the header tank on the 1.6 HDi.

John, excellent news so far!!!
Fingers crossed you'll be driving it later today and all the hard work has resulted in an excellent car...

Re: new addition to fleet
many thanks both
Richard I will grab and PM the VIN at lunchtime.. I should really learn about this service box thing!.
presumably, if I treat the pipe (and the small bolt I have blocked it with), as a bleed point - before the others, I have a chance of clearing some air from it..
and as long as the two main pipes to the exchanger are always warm and the same temp I may be ok, for now :O
first long drive may be Somerset on Friday

Re: new addition to fleet
John
I can see the pipe, no idea what it does though... The gearbox cooler seems to have both flow and return hoses from the top hose, so no idea how it gets flow through it - unless there is a valve or something in the hose. The other end goes to the oil cooler outlet. I wonder if it might be a sensing pipe or something for the box cooler. Neither pipe is disasterously expensive (not sure which bit you have broken):
Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT
00001323GH OUTLET HOSE 16.42 GBP 19.70 GBP
00001323GJ WATER PIPE 6.16 GBP 7.39 GBP
I reckon probably OK at this time of year if you are not caning it / towing a big trailer, but probably worth fixing in the long term.

Re: new addition to fleet
Car drove tonight! Took ages to rebuild suspension after fitting driveshaft... the front wheels i left under for safety had taken on a fair bit of weight since engine started yesterday .expected really..
.finally took her all of 100m up the lane .. nothing to report yet.. need to give her more of a kick tomorrow .. gears fine .levels fine suspension fine .temps fine ..couldn't get her hot after 30 mins..but cabin heat was there and bleed points had no air .. 8 litres have gone in.3 antifreeze 5 water..
She arrived on a trailer less than 3 weeks ago with a nacked engine.. and now she drives !!
