haven't ruled mine out Mike, but car seems to register 225rpm or whatever on the lexia, but now I think about it, that's the terminal speed, after a few turns..
Glowplugs were called for again today, voltage was a normal 11.8 or so, god knows where the 15V came from yesterday,,
HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold - FIXED - NOT - YES

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
well well

took the glows out, only one was gone.. replaced it and put others back in.. 3 can go back to ECP to fund whatever else I need to buy..
definite flecks of metal in the filter housing.. changed filter anyway..
is that it? as per previous replies, another HP pump needed? I cant see anything else really..
thanks as always
John

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
I fail to see how particles can go BACKWARDS to the filter housing!
The metal bits are useually from the In Tank pump where fitted, not the engine pump!
The filter is before the engine pump and injectors, so it has to come from the tank pump..

I don't believe that either. The metal bits have been present in the filter housing of the Berlingo both times I've changed the filter. It doesn't have an in-tank pump, so, where *are* they coming from? It can only be internal crud from the fuel system, surely?citroenxm wrote:I fail to see how particles can go BACKWARDS to the filter housing!

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
There's quite a big return flow from the HP pump to the tank to cool the pump (hence the fuel cooler under the car). So, particles from the pump can get back to the tank via the return line, and then onto the filter later....
You've only really got injectors or starter left, John. Do a leak off test next - if none of them are giving excessive leak back, then change the starter.
Odd that the HDi in the C5 is a reluctant starter if the cranking speed is a bit low - when the +ve lead was high resistance on my Xantia it was cranking really very slowly, but never failed to start.... perhaps the slow starter problem only affects Siemens systems without the lift pump?

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
Ive never had starting issues with mine with slow starting, but hey ho...
Right Richard, id never thought about the return curcuit really.
PS: My cutting out issue has come back and cut out again today!

No, it just sounds like it! They obviously come from *somewhere* but as I've no in-tank pump, it can't be that.citroenxm wrote:Sorry, mike are you disagreeing with me? Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
My C5 starts ok in the freezing cold (about the only thing it does right). The Berlingo had problems, it's Siemens. No lift pump or fuel cooler. Odd isn't it?RichardW wrote:There's quite a big return flow from the HP pump to the tank to cool the pump (hence the fuel cooler under the car). Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
sorry all. and thanks for replies.. wrote my post in haste and then had a think .. either the HP pump has gone and directed flow to tank.. or maybe the LP pump has gone, and particles have got through the filter and damaged the HP pump?
Richard.. despite metal flakes in the filter, you still think injectors or starter could be causing this cold start issue? something somewhere is worn and that isn't a good thing,,,
so far, I have brought :
a fuel filter (brought last week as I read a post saying it can help starting issues, fitted tonight anyway for the fun of it)
a brand new battery (not fitted yet, still think mine is good really - waiting)
a lexia, avoided buying this until now, despite maybe 20 PSA cars so far..
new glow plugs, fitted one tonight as one of mine was duff.. (easy job to remove, easier than a TD)
still have possible starter issue, even though car turn over as fast as ever, starts well enough all the time when it's above 10C
Injectors, not sure about those,. certainly one is showing suspect behaviour.,
I somehow thought that modern cars, while taking more cash to diagnose, would be easier to diagnose..
- its easier if a cambelt breaks or a major electrical fault, at least you know where you are.. but this fault..grr.. car runs as well as ever and has done 25000 faultless miles (and continues to run really well)
erm.. I am grateful that I can use the car everyday as normal, with a little effort spraying easy start in. there is little option for me except the motorbike, but that has a couple of issues of it's own, not withstanding the weather
but all in all, I am trying hard to take my time working out what is wrong with my C5, and learning a fair bit on the way ,,
staying calm

Re: HDi 2.0 8V wont start when cold
There is, but I would have thought any metal crud would have sunk to the bottom of the tank out of the reach of the pump with the rest of the sediment that's found there.taffy wrote:there is still a return to tank on both?
