Alan - Our 'plod' have just started using hidden cameras in the backs of vans. One of the national newspapers this week showed a photgraph of one of them in operation. It was parked on a yellow line, half on the pavement and also blocking a cycle lane. One law for them - and a different one for us!

Just thought I would chip, in my ten pence worth, I live in the cleveland authority area and cleveland police is the only force in he country where 100% of fines taken for driving convictions goes diectly to the loca authority. This was introduced approx 3 years ago as a pilot scheme. In them three years it was hailed a success as speeding convictions in the area increased by 70%. Hardly suprising as there were 7 known vans parked around the ain roads coming into the town centre. all the roads were 40mph and suddenly dropped to 30 mph, and all the vans were unmarked small escort vans which conveniently parked between other cars and the camera was then hidden behind a civilian car! Is it legal? the answer is NO. Three people I know have succesfuly attended court and avoided bans and numerous others avoided fines and points as the law clearly states that if radar/camera equipment is to be used it has to be clearly visible to the driver frm a distance of forty feet. Unless a sign is used in advance on the same stretch of road within half a mile. Hence all the roadsigns advising of speed cameras when there isn't any. Next time you get a ticket through the post check the road for signs in relation to your positionon the road. You might get one over on the W*/!&RS.
P.S. This info was given to me by a traffic policeman so I stick by it. But I won't accept liabilty if you go out speeding and get caught!

An update - This 'offence' took place in January. A couple of weeks ago the driver went before the court. The magistrate adjourned the case until October because the CPS were not ready with the witnesses. Unbelievable!!

Sounds to me like someone in "high places" has made an ass out of himself & is looking for a way out.
Either that or "Ripley's believe it or not" couldn't get a camera crew there in time.[:o)]
They could have taken an easy option though; heard the case on April first. It would have been fitting. [:p][:p][:p]

What can you say, we are VERY easy targets, a number plate, a tax disc, etc, etc, its hardly surprising that there are so many bandits about, just think you could buy a tatty BX at auction for ?50 give a false name and address and just drive off. Think of the money you could save on minor details like tax insurance MOT etc, run it on old cooking oil or tax free central heating oil, but no we don't and we get caught every time. My car has been broken into endless times over the years, no one ever caught, same goes with my house, and finally my father in law was murdered by terrorists in NI 25 years ago this week and we are still awaiting an arrest. Governments round the world need to sit up and take notice of law abiding citizens like us even thinking about the sort of scenario I described above because the Law has always had a problem with those who choose to completely ignore it and if the numbers of those sort of people increase the descent into anarchy moves one step closer
Now I've got that lot off my chest I'll put the cheque in the post for my insurance renewal like a good boy ;-)

I was just thinking the other night; wouldn't it be interesting to ask the various Political Parties in our respective Countries if they could disclose how much money they have received in Party Donations from the manufacturers of these speed cameras & Laser radars as well as how often they have been in discussions with lobbyists from these manufacturers or distibutors?
I already have a Government Committee here with ants in their pants when I forwarded a submission in which I proved that it was revenue based & asked why the Treasury is setting the agenda on road safety; might run that one past 'em too. Should be good for a few sleepless nights. [:D][:p][:D][:p]

This poor guy has been had this case hanging over him for ten months now and he's to hear the verdict tomorrow. The rumour is that the CPS do not intend to proceed with the case. Let's hope so.
Meanwhile, a bloke in West Yorkshire has had his car examined by a team of three policemen. After giving the car a good going-over he was given a fixed penalty ticket of £60 and 3 points. The faults with the car - an empty windscreen washer reservoir and a loose battery terminal! The area Chief Constable has decided that the ticket should be withdrawn.

The case has been dropped. The CPS have decided it's not in the public interest.
In a way, that's a shame, I think it would have been better to go to court and have a stated case to say that the vehicle was being used, "for ambulance purposes." That would clarify the issue for the future, but now we're no further forward.
