Particle filter clogging

Post by Plenty1977 »

Hi im new here so don't know if this has been posted before. My van said on Friday evening that it has "risk of particle filter clogging" to which I drove it to work this morning and whilst going down the m40 it said engine fault and it went into limp mode. Is there a way of taking it out of limp mode?
Thanks in advance

It means the particle filter is at risk of blocking - either because the system has been unable to regenerate the filter due to short stop and start trips or because it is at or near the life of the filter and needs deep cleaning or replacing.

Driving at 40 MPH for at least 10 minutes should allow the filter to regenerate, but if it cannot do this it may mean it is too full to regenerate. Have you been getting messages prior to this? If so, once the filter gets anywhere over 70% blocked, it can become impossible to regenerate.

You can't take it out of limp mode - it will do this all the time the fault is there. It needs attention.

you can delete the faults and they may or may not come straight on again, worth a try it might get you out of limp mode

The particle filter upstream / downstream pressure sensors are also used to detect a blockage, so if you have already been cruising at these speeds and this distance, then the filter is likely blocked and can't regenerate.

If it was the additive level. I'd expect you would have received a message about topping that up.

So this condition won't disappear or even if you can clear the fault it temporarily, I expect it will be back on very shortly - faults come on for a reason.

If you are anywhere near a Halfords - some of these offer a DPF clean service with the filter in situ - so may be worth a shot.

You need a suitable diagnostic tool - but that really isn't going to help you. The fault is on for a reason as the sensors have informed the Engine ECU there is a problem and the engine ECU has gone into reduced power mode. This will happen again almost immediately if there is a blockage. The longer you drive the worse this will get - if the filter won't regenerate it will totally block up and won't easily able to be cleaned out.

Ok, so have your recovery number to hand just in case!

It might be a faulty pressure sensor of course that is causing this - but hard to say without further investigation. Let us know how it turns out.

How many miles has the vehicle done?
