Very disappointing when you pay huge sums like that for an allegedly 'quality' car and they are no more reliable than the cheaper options, but cost a small fortune to repair.

One of my boss' had a new Jaguar, there was a huge hole in the carpet just under the passenger seat.
He did say that "the Jaguar is a ritzy motor but no better than most others".

I have NEVER understood such crazy miles between services!!!!

My wife's lowly C4 1.6HDi is coming up to 90 odd thousand, but the mot tester was astounded it still has the original turbo, lol. I do the oil every year.... Saying that, the car averages about 4k per annum, although now we've moved 5 miles further away, that will increase. But I am anal about oil changes and specify the best oil for this car, low ash and all. It has suffered electronic glitches, strange gearbox (clutch) issues and all manner of punctures, CV boot ripping out the ABS sensors (never experience this before or since) and the rear (manual) windows dropping after a week, but the engine is absolutely spot on reliable.

My own (2012) Berlingo is an ex taxi with 150k and the engine is superb! Doesn't burn a drop of oil (although it appears to be weeping past the seal on the replacement oil cooler fitted before I bought it, and it is weeping coolant at same place.... Methinks mechanic wasn't too bothered about how he fastened it....I'm watching it and I have to top up the coolant every few thou. That aside, the car is as reliable as I can think. Never let me down, although I only got it in March. I love the willingness of the engine and the blithe indifference of the piloted gearbox, ha ha ha. But it is a pretty car (for a van) and superbly comfortable.

I digress. This post is about the self destructing engine and it is most definitely caused by stupid design, exacerbated by galactic oil service intervals.
Has anyone seen the plot? :?

Superb stuff, thanks Marc. So much so I've re-posted no. 2 on the Z1 OC site as the old kwaks were in-line bored, crank and cams to the point that if you have a head with no cam caps.......it's scrap. Very costly and hard to find as I found out on my 1983 GPZ1100.

Somewhere out there in Youtube-land there's film of Allen Millyard line boring one his specials with nothing more than a Black & Decker drill and some suitable bar and bearings :shock:
Sadly no longer a C5 owner :(

And part 3.5 as Fabian's Land Rover is still in bits and awaiting parts, so Christian and Vera are doing some interesting Glow Plug experiments......
