Juddering by acceleration C5 X7

Post by Cveto »

I have the following problem:
During our recent longer trip I found out that by heavy acceleration there is juddering which you can realy feel. It happens between 60kph and 110kph, then it dissapears. When I lift my foot off the pedal, it dissapears. So when the car is coasting, or you just keep the speed, you cannot really feel it.
It is mostly noticeable when entering highway, when you go from 40kph to 120kph quite quickly. By higher speed, up to 150kmph, it is not there anymore.
I have tried accelerating in different gears, but it is not engine rpm related, only speed related.
Car data:
C5 X7, 2.0HDi 163PS, autobox, 2014, 190.000km

Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome.

Are all the wheels balanced?
Are all the tyres properly circular and running true? Jack up one wheel at a time, rotate by hand, and check.

Hello Chris,

thanks for replying. The wheels and tyres have been checked, they are OK.
There is a strong suspicion that there is something wrong on the half shaft.
Does anybody have a similar experience?
Could I have the part numbers for the right and left half shafts and flanges for my car? So everything from gearbox to wheels. I would like to check the prices on Autodoc.
My VIN is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].
Thank you.

My local mechanic (no Citroen expert, but OK) diagnosed the problem as "something wrong with half axle". He proposes replacing both, left and right. Could I get the part numbers for these for my car?

Thank you.

My half axles have been replaced one month ago. Left one is 3272SZ, right one is 3273TP. Of course both are copies.
Heavy juddering by acceleration has definetely dissapeared. But it is not completely OK. Above 80km/h there are slight vibrations that you can on the steering wheel and in the whole car. I have replaced front and rear wheels - the same. I even had wheels newly balanced, there is slightly less vibration but not OK.
Could be the non-original half axles as the only culprit?
Can there be something else?

Those are the correct part numbers for your specific vehicle, but not all parts are made equal.

You said you had the wheels balanced, but did you have the tracking done after you replaced them?

Does the tracking also need to be done after half axle replacement?

Yes, the tracking should really be done after any of the suspension geometry / steering components are changed.

When you consider that even a bad pot hole can cause tracking issues. But vibration is generally caused by imbalance. Incorrect tracking can cause pulling to left or right / cause uneven tyre wear for example.
