Notification email delay

Post by mickthemaverick »

Over the last few days I have not been receiving notification emails when the post is made as I used to. I seem to be getting a whole bunch of emails at the same time for posts made much earlier. eg, 03.20 this morning emails for last nights last 8 posts on the off topic chat lounge. Is anyone else having this trouble or might it be my own outlook playing up after last weeks windows update? :?:

PS I have just confirmed that if I make a purchase both the supplier confirmation and paypal confirmation emails arrive immediately!! :)

Hi Mick

Yes, we've been aware of this too. This was happening over the last few days, but Mike has applied some configuration changes that should of improved matters, however, if you are still continuing to have issues, please do let us know.

Do you just get e-mails when someone quotes you in a post Mick? If so you should get one for this

Nice idea Neil, but no still had no emails from this thread or the Pennine Cycleway post. I'm beginning to think I've upset the email server!! :-D

They seem to come in batches and as Marc says this has been observed over some time. I didn't react as I just bin them all anyway.
I dip in and use the "Unread Posts" list which is always up to date.

My go to "tab" is Active Topics.

Dont bother with e-mail notifications, or indeed actively subscribing to any topic, just view all the active topics and make a contribution if I can.

I rely on the emails as I invariably get involved in other things and don't think to look at the active tabs to see if anything has been posted. I subscribe to the OTCL and the Citroen Forum so pick up whatever is happening on those two. The other stuff I only tend to look at when pointed there by a third party action! :)

There is a problem with email notifications being delayed. It seems to have started (or got worse) at the time that I made a mjor configuration change to the server software, but there is no obvious link connecting the two.

I will be working on this until the problem is understood, unfortunately the software responsible for sending notification emails is rather convoluted.

The notification emails are created during the thread that makes a post, but they are then queued in a disk file that is occasionally flushed into the actual email system when another user access the forum (don't ask why), but there are also various interlocks to prevent the disk file getting flushed too often or too many emails sent at once.

Thanks for that clarification Mike, now I know you are aware of it I am certain it will be resolved in due course. Meanwhile everyone now knows why my responses to posts may not be as rapid as normal. :-D

I found what appeared to be a stale lock in the database and cleared it, which may have fixed the problem, although stale locks are supposed to clear themselves after an hour, so something still needs to be explained.
