My 1993 1800 diesel 205 started making a slight knocking noise while driving. It felt like it was the CV joints and my local garage agreed, so i had them replaced but the knock continued. When turning right on bends, corners and roundabouts the knock gets louder but quietens down in a straight line. I took it back to the garage and now they're telling me it's the gearbox on it's way out. Does this problem sound familier to anyone as a replacement box is going to be costly and i don't want to spend loads out on such and old car.
Does anyone here think that the garage has over looked something or are they just trying to get some extra money out of me.
Any help appreciated.
Many thanx........Trev.[:(]
New drive shafts.......still knocking.

I would be examining the wheel bearings, I wouldn't give the box a secondary glance, I've never known a gearbox to make different sounds due to a change in the direction the car is going, and especially so if the noise stops abruptly on changing direction, when a gearbox is in trouble it usualy makes different sounds due to the amount of load on it regardless of the direction the car is going, i.e when it is either on power or over run.

I had knocking on turning once and after changing the track control arm twice it turned out to be the hub unit (the cone in the bottom where the track onctrol arm went inwas oversized). But I agree with others - most likely options are wheel bearings, driveshafts and track control arms. You've done one of those....
