You will probably have many different answers to this one depending on driving style and vehicle use.

Just before i answer you, and i haven't looked this one up, is a Kiwi gallon the same as a UK gallon or is it the same as the US gallon - if you know what i mean.

Right now your answer i was never that impressed with my Xantia TD i would get on average 40mpg maybe even 45mpg on a long motorway run - however if i gave it some and to be honest probably drove it how i was not designed to be driven i could easily get it down to 35mpg.

My Xantia was a great car i purchased it with 80k on the clock and gave it my mate (idiot) at 200k and it still had a great engine in it.

Not owned a Xantia but I regularly used to get 50+ mpg on a reasonably long journey from my 2.1 td XMs, but as said it depends on where and how you drive, I rarely drove at over 60 mph and 2000 rpm and I am in a rural location. I think the 2.1 is a bit better on fuel than the 1.9 as it is a more advanced engine - in fact I think the best IDI diesel ever made.

New Zealand uses UK gallons not US. (Well, it uses Litres actually but when MPG is mentioned it is based on UK gallons)

Best result was 480 miles to half a tank, extreme hypermiling (and not all that fun!)

On average about 45 though. If you drive constantly on boost it will drink diesel though, it's worth it to change all the filters and fluids if they're unknown!
