On the other hand over in Co Kildare, UPC 240Mb broadband...I could download that in about a minute. :pp: Look on the bright side, just think of all the money your saving.

(I'll download it for you and stick it on a DVD if you like and let An Post do the rest - that's if I'm able to download it and you tell me which version. This is a almost Microsoft-free household and I only sorted out installing Win7 the other week onto a laptop so I could do some diagnostics on a Honda or two.)

It wasn't that long ago I was hoping to do my Microsoft exams on Windows 7...then a few months ago I decided I should do it for Windows 8 instead. Now I'm thinking by the time I get around to it I should really think about doing the Windows 10 ones!

No problem. A decent internet connection was a must for me when picking a house to rent and I know it can vary wildly even from house to house here.

I have also had the upgrade option become available. I was talking to Microsoft recently, and I was told that the upgrade was free, and was for life PROVIDED it was used on the motherboard in the PC upgraded. If the motherboard is replaced you will need to get a licence. I forgot to ask how much this is.

I received a brand new PC a couple of days ago, shipped with windows 8.1, on first boot it offered an upgrade to 10 which I accepted. It took 5 hours to download (with several pauses of 30 minutes with no progress), and half an hour or so to upgrade. After checking that windows 10 had activated correctly I decided to do a clean install to remove the Lenovo bloatware and had to wait another 4 hours for the windows 10 iso to download, followed by a round of repartitioning, reinstalling windows, and the latest device drivers.

Overall I like windows 10, so far.

Good tip about replacing the motherboard though.

A friend and I are both having full blown occasional lock up issues with win10 whilst watching videos. Both have msi gs70 laptops and we suspect it's the intel graphics driver as that seems to randomly restart aswell occasionally.

Mine generally seems to be OK, a little faster at some jobs than W7, I am however having a problem with ebay being slow. I saw suggested on the net that I should list it on 'trusted sites' under internet settings, I tried that and it continually asks me for to log in although I am, so I had to remove it again. As I say apart from that it seems to work fine, certainly comes up to speed quicker when you turn it on.

My windows 8.1 is blindingly fast to load but I just hate the stupid system tray popping up with the cursor near the foot of the page. There are some things , like scrolling through photos in "my pictures" where the arrow is fixed at the bottom, that is a real pain. Same with the "settings/search etc appearing from the right side when I am trying to use the scroll bar to move the page. In my humble and uneducated opinion, windows 8.1 was designed by a moron , completely detached from millions of ordinary PC users. Yes, I know he was educated to unbelievable standards in IT, but that didn't give him a single ounce of common sense. I can't be the only one, because he was sacked soon after launch I believe. Just saying.
