So I was doing my equivalent of retail therapy, in my spare time I like to buy random junk that's been thrown away for the last few decades.
I was checking out some yard full of various junked cars and semi junked cars and engines and other treasures, and I came across what I assume to be a first-generation Boxer/Ducato/whatever else it was called. It was the really old square-nosed type, from back when Talbot still existed.
The thing that kind of seemed strange to me is that it was not diesel, it was a gasser!
I didn't get a very good look at the engine, the front end of the van was badly damaged, and the whole thing was dumped half in a ditch and half in a tree and is not very accessible, however it would be possible to drag what's left of the van's disembodied front end out of the ditch/tree.
I didn't even get a photo of the engine, or figure out which brand that van was (they are all the same I guess, right?). I don't know how old it is either.
The one thing that I did notice was that the engine was carbed, the air filter was cylindrical and transversely mounted on top of the engine, and the spark plug cables went through guide tubes going straight through the top of the cam cover/rocker cover.
Does anybody happen to know what engine that is? Is it worth pulling it out of the ditch, and taking the engine out, just to save it? Or is it something reasonably common and not worth messing with?

Yep I'd say it sounds like a 2.2 or 2.0 Cx engine.
Not really rare as it was shared in various Pug Volvo Renault
and Cit models - its the famous cooperative Douvrin engine.

Nah, if it was a H van, I would have pulled it out of that ditch/tree with my bare teeth and it would have already been at my storage place. I am sure it was one of those very early Boxer/derivatives. The engine was transverse, I am afraid I don't remember the filler cap.

Oh, by the way, is it true that this engine uses the same bell housing pattern as the XU family? Or not?
