Hi,
Just wanted to know if it's normal for the brake pedal on my xantia to make a sort of sucking noise when released?? If I push the brake pedal down and then release it makes the noise on release. Could the doseur valve be on it's way out? I checked for leaks but can't seem to find any.

Sometimes they do but not normally very loudly.
It sounds like air. I'd be tempted to give all the brakes a very good bleed and if it reoccurs after a short while of silence following bleeding then you may suspect a slowly rupturing sphere letting nitrogen into the hydraulics. The so-called anti-sink sphere can be a guilty party for this.

Hi I've already bled the brakes and recently changed all the spheres but it's not made any difference to the noise. It's not loud loud but it's noticeable.

Re: Xantia brake pedal noise
Every Xantia I've had (4), has done this. I've flushed and cleaned and bled two of them and the brake pedal still makes this noise. It's like a sucking, squelching noise. Always figured it was just a quirk of the model. The brakes have always worked find.

Re: Xantia brake pedal noise
A sucking/slurping noise when pressing the pedal down moderately hard then releasing quickly is perfectly normal.
All of the Xantia's I've seen and owned do this, and older hydropneumatic Citroens such as GS/CX do the same. It's just the sound of the fluid rushing quickly back through tiny orifices in the doseur valve when you release the pedal. The brake pressure in hydropneumatic citroens is much higher than normal vacuum servo systems so the fluid flow is very rapid through very small piping/orifices, causing a noise.
Nothing to worry about at all, assuming the brakes are working normally. Its just a Citroen quirk.

Re: Xantia brake pedal noise
Thanks for the replies. It's put my mind at rest as it seems that it's normal.

+1 for the normal noise. It's even louder on the CX but my mk1 BX squelched like a beast. If you think that's a hydraulic noise you should hear the CX steering column! Or even better the mk1 xantia flow divider that makes people turn and look! Love the real Citroën noises!
