DOT3/4: So Darned Expensive!

Post by addo »

I reckon these may be a rort.

Have just been drawing up the next three months' budget for my fleet (exceeds current forecast earnings by 20% - whoops  ) and boggling at the cost of ordinary old brake fluid.

Really, is there any reason known other than "because they can" for why manufacturers of glycol type fluids price them as they do? It's hardly new technology, so not as if there are R&D costs to wear off.

I never buy the stuff - oh the joy of hydraulic Citroens :-D

I really do believe they just charge what they can get away with. After all (nearly) everybody needs it so they have a captive audience...

Take inkjet printer ink cartridges as an example. The ink is one of the costliest substances on the planet and a great moneyspinner for the makers.

LHM is not exactly cheap either these days...

Those prices, Malcolm, are more sane. I did find one possible supplier here of sub-20 litre quantities around $10/litre, but generally it's a good 35% dearer.

Well, the filled cartridges are certainly expensive, but bulk ink isn't.
If you buy a continuous ink system, ink costs become insignificant, and you don't have the hassle of changing carts.

I use DOT3 with added carbon black, in my printer. Creates a pigment the colour of Kate Williams' nails.
