That's good Isa, the problem is coming to light now...
Yours is an S1. An R plater can be a bit of a transition model with some S2 bits fitted...
Follow VertVega's guide and you'll be fine. No need to remove the bumper, even on an S1, to replace the fan motors but it is a tricky old job. There is just enough space to extricate the motors!
Golden tip: The screw holding the fan blades to the motor spindle is a Left Hand Thread so it unscrews the opposite way to what you'd expect!
Dieseldoggy, that's a good tip. No need to on a petrol as they come on often enough. Another way to exercise them is to run the aircon; the fans always run at half speed when the aircon is in operation.

I have two fans from a 1994 Xantia TD no aircon which I have recently dismantled. Happy to send them if you decide this is your problem.
I did have the fans not working problem with my current Xantia. I did what is probably going to be regarded as a terrible bodge and created a new earth and manually operated the high speed fans with a switch installed in the oddments tray of the central console by running a wire to the switch from the earth pin of the left fan relay. Effectively this activates the relay and switches the both high speed fans on.
As far as I could work it out the sensor in the side of the radiator determines whether the earth side of the relays makes the appropriate connection and hence onwards to operating the fans at low or high speed.
I suspect some fault with mine along the earthing path somewhere, or with the radiator sensor.

Have we GOT a step by step guide for Fan removal... I need to do this on my Mums Y reg HDi, as theres no life in the fans on that..
The Fan fuses are in the fuse box area, with the large cover removed they are the two MASSIVE 60 AMP Orange fuses - Not the smaller ones in the box...

it appears that i have one relay less in my fusebox than the one which you have given a picture of... the two on the furthest left in your pic,,,i only have on their in my car...

That doesn't matter, The Xantia doesn't use those relays there to control them.. instead they have the THREE in a triangular box between the Fans... were the power from those two fuses is carried down to the relays..
Have you pulled the relays out of the triangular box between the fans?? Corrosion of the relay pins preventing fan operation is common in here...

If you want to be clever, or BRAVE, when you have the 3 relays out, locate PIN 3 on the LEFT HAND green relay plug, and PIN 5 on the lower BLACK Relay plug, and apply 12v to it, the left fan should spin up full speed!!
That confirms it works or not, its a slightly clever system in that the left fan is the main one, when this one operates it then switch's the right fan on after...

i think it's been established the the fan motors themselves are at fault here, as the right one starts with a little encouragement from the hammer, and the left one doesn't start to spin at all...
i was just mentioning those relays in the fusebox, as regardless what for, mine is clearly missing one right...? so i was just trying to clear that up...

here is a a video of testing the Xantia Fan motors which I took out of my old Xantia.
despite a bit of surface rust they work fine.

If you have a multi meter it is worth checking the relays are receiving a supply from the wiring loom.
My fan problem was a connector in the wiring loom once bypassed fans worked normally.
But both fans worked at full speed when you unplugged the brown sensor.

ok...
the left relay, gives arund 12v on the right and left pins, and around 3 on the bottom pin..
the right relay gives nothing..like a 2v or so...
however, the bit that confused me is, before taking the fans off and checking the relays, the right fan motor kicked in with help pf the hammer, but clearly wasn't working properly as mentioned previously, and the left did nothing at all...
is it possible that the relay may be in reverse on this motor?
