NiSk, on the filter boxes, other applications of the TUD5 engine (other than the wholly unspeakable Metro) are the Nissan Micra, Xantia (some markets) and Moskovitch (!). All of the TUD5s I have seen have been fitted with a Bosch EP-VE rotary pump, whose supreme reliability is wrecked by the lousy Valeo immobiliser - but I now know the fix. Body panels are generally different between the Saxo and 106 - in some cases the differences are annoyingly slight. For example, the bonnet has differently shaped cut outs for the headlamps, likewise the tailgate.

the 1.5 diesel was used by Rover in the Rover 100 diesel..makes a Saxo looks totally rust free.
A 1.4 is totally reliable providing it is meticulously maintained.. our 106 1.4 diesel is 12 years old. Head gasket? whatsthat?
But it does rust under the boot floor - which I waxoyled so it does not rust.
The 1.5 HAS an iron block. Do NOT buy a 1.5 without power steering. The 1.4 with aluminium engine is heavy around town parking..

Rover 100 = Metro. Thank heavens they went out of business, especially as their own engines were so unreliable - who wants a car with a duff engine and a rusty body?
Lack of power steering on the 1.5 106D no problem at all here.

The 1.5D started life in the AX before the Saxo/106 its also been used in the Rover Metro/100. I couldnt kill mine when I had one, the rest of the car fell to bits first.

I think you will find the AX & the early 106s had the 1.4 litre TU diesel engine.<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">They were also fitted to the later AX - It was deffo a 1.5 I had in mine - like I said, engine good, car bad, The early Saxo wasnt a lot different mechanically to the AX anyway.

I was not impressed by the cramped engine bay, fuel filter change was a pain (compared to the ZX).As you might have guessed I sold the AX and got another ZX TD...<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote">

Took a look at it today - a fair amount of surface rust on the chassis members below the engine - the rads leaking from top rh corner - so low coolant level. Bodged soldered joint on stop solenoid (??) rust spot on rh inside luggage area at a weld seem - looks like I could push my finger through if I pressed a little harder . . . otherwise in fair bodily condition. Plenty of engine noise in the cabin . . seats pretty sat down . . very spartan interior. Imported from Germany - wants approx £1500.
Think I'll give it a miss.

I don't think the Metro has been sold for some time.... and the engines... there the same ones as the Caterham, Lotus Elise etc.... stonkningly quick and light motors...
I also believe at 105BHP for a 1.4, it's one of the best NASP engines available..... lots of hype, not a lot of substance.
Funny how people on Rover forums say, "who'd buy a Citroen with that suspension that goes wrong all the time and costs a lot to fix"....
Ignorance all round i think.....

As a secondhand purchase now, would you consider either a Rover 820 or a Rover metro with the K series engine? Their second hand values reflect the general sentiment. The reason I raised the point on this thread was to point out that PSA had adressed at least some of their problems on the Saxo/106 in the case of galvanised outer panels, and an iron blocked self-venting (cooling system) diesel.
I would be the first to acknowledge PSA also need to make huge strides in the reliability game, but there are some signs they might just be doing this. Their salvation of course, is that they make the best affordable small diesels around - even Rover knew this. If I wanted a petrol car, PSA would not get my money.
