Yes, thankfully that's gone away again for now.

If your Picasso has jumped to the £20 bracket Jim, then it's still fairly painless, a few pence on duel duty, even with your low mileage, would soon eclipse it.

Our Cactus went up from zero to £20 this year, not enough to bother people but £20 less to spend on other things and all part of the current governments desperate need/greed to get as much tax off everyone. They have not increased the £40k price with inflation for the higher rate car tax so in time all cars might be subject to it.

Matt, I've just noticed that amongst your blog title you have one of modern times sinful cars. What's with GTi and HDi on the same car? That, in my book, is equivalent to putting 'Cooper S' on a Mini Diesel and is a blindingly obvious demonstration of the lack of understanding of car history in the minds of those designers!! Merry Christmas!! :rofl2:

On that theme I bought new badges for my BX 16V and my mate pinched the old one and put it on the back of his Estelle. When questioned at shows he simply reminded the enquirer of the 8 in the radio!! :-D

Ha ha, fair question Mick,

The 206 GTi HDi is on the one hand wearing the wrong badge, though the badge was put there by the manufacturer (not a cheeky up (or down) badging as described by others here)

In it's defence I will say the 16 valve 1.6 DV6 HDi is easily the most rev happy diesel I've ever come across, it does not have the pronounced turbo-whoosh (of say an XUD9TE) and is much happier to "rev it out".

Though rated at 110 bhp, as in other applications, I also wonder if Peugeot took a few little steps to give the 206 GTi application "slightly larger horses" than others. Example: the standard exhaust on this is 2 1/4" where as the "same" 1.6 HDi 110 in my previous C4 had to breath out through a 2" system :)

All together I found the 206 to be rather good fun.

Yet to have a crack at a proper GTi , so equally what do I know!? :-D

Contemporary review here of it, echoing much of how I feel about it:

I can live with Turbo badging as it was on diesels first so that use is an improvement and I have no objection to that. However GTi belongs to a unique group of petrol powered cars incorporating the Golf and 205 as well as a couple of others that I cannot think of right now and should be respected for that!! I could not guess at how many times John Cooper has turned in his grave as he sees his name taken and displayed on cars he wouldn't be seen in now!! :-D

You'll need to ask Sergeant Schultz from Hogan's Heroes to get the answer to that!! :-D

I was under the impression that the SAAB Turbo (a 99 IIRC) was the first one such badged.

I believe you are right there Steve on cars, but turbos had been in use on diesels long before that, in fact before WW2: https://www.motortrend.com/features/180 ... -a-history :)

Well, it was a bit of a struggle as a fully-fledged OAP at first but my winter fuel payment nicely covered it :)
